I borrowed a friends 2016 Tacoma for a few days and was surprised at how unreadable the Radio/Nav screen was in the daytime...you know when the sun is out.

I don't think the rest of the Toyota line has such a hard to read display, is this just with the Tacomas?

I'm looking to get a 2018 but that screen will annoy me on the regular. Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket radio I could install or have installed that might also be compatible with the factory backup camera and whatever other systems are tied in to the needlessly shiny stock display?

I've never had that problem, if I did it was usually because there was dust on the screen and once I wiped it off it was fine

I cranked up the brightness on the display and that helped alot.

Crutchfield. Be careful if you want an aftermarket to be wireless, most of the aftermarkets still require USB tethering. As far as sun on the screen I have'n't noticed. I have noticed that the receiving SirusXM in the North East is terrible and had to DEMAND a refund from them as they fought me even when I produced gps coordinates for more then 50 drop out locations on my 20 mile round trip not related to overpasses. Prepare to pony up the ca$h. I put in the front camara mod...works well. If you are that specific about sun glare you will want to do real research.

This truck is way better with glare then say my parents Highlander that's only a year older. In fact it's so nice it automatically switches with lighting changes not dependent on the headlghts. Non issue, your friends radio needs settings adjusted.

We had a '14 Highlander that was terrible about this. Haven't noticed it in my new '18, even with the sunroof open.

If you want to got the aftermarket route, there are a ton of good CarPlay/Android Auto receivers. Problem is, you'll need the adapters and other things to integrate the vehicle settings/information. Those add up fast.

I think you're just looking for an excuse to get an aftermarket radio. My truck has dealer legal tinted windows and glare has never been an issue. If you want the aftermarket radio, just buy it.

Don't get the sunroof if you don't like glare, unless you want to keep the shield closed all the time. I've got tinted windows, no sunroof. Glare isn't an issue for me.

So it sounds like you have no clue what you're talking about in the first sentence then. They all come with sun shades. Non issue.

My son 3D prints these for $22, includes shipping. In black. Inbox if interested. This is mine that he created for me because I couldn’t find one anywhere else. Attaches with 3M double sided tape or command hook tape (very small squares)

Nice! But it seems like you can hardly see the screen all together, lol.

I definitely don't understand some of the comments here. I live in Florida and I have tinted windows on my Taco. Glare on the darn head unit screen is ridiculous. No I don't have a sun roof. My wife has a Toyota Avalon. Same flipping thing on her unit. Terrible glare when the sun hits it just right from the windshield. It makes no sense to me why they would tilt the screen install backwards which cause the sun to glare off the screen so you can't see it. I am forever holding my hand over the screen to block the sun so I can read the screen

Appears the OP has maybe moved on. Is anyone else maybe 3D printing a shade?
