I'm not sure what is going on in this thread... I feel like it's a religious cult where you can't say one possible flaw without being shunned as a nonbeliever.

Quick poll, how many posting how much better lockers are currently have front and rear lockers in their 2nd gen Tacoma.
    (Crickets.......)
    Yeah, that's what I thought.

And I know how a space shuttle works, I don't go spewing about it ad infinitum, to the people who use that technology, pretending I know better.....
But then again, thats what you do....

Laws of physics don't change. A lot of people have pointed out advantages of ATRAC over lockers and vice versa, but it's not good enough for ATRAC fanboys unless we say ATRAC is the best thing in the world.

You yourself even said you use lockers in some situations. If ATRAC was superior to lockers in ALL situations like some would have us believe, you would never EVER use the locker. That's all a lot of us are saying.

Ha ha... I do have a question about the FJ though. Since ATRAC is like a switch you have to buy in FJs, what exactly is in that switch? Is it programming? Does it work like a usb drive?

Or is it merely just an unlock code for ATRAC programming?

    hmm..
didnt buy a switch for mine. The all terrain package already came prewired for it. I remember seeing on the FJC forum that it is as easy as buying the a trac switch and plugging it in. i guess they come prewired for a trac and those FJC's w/out atrac can do the "a trac hack" mod. There may be more to the mod, but i didnt read it 100%

if you get bored and wanna read more on the topic

i just hopped on this thread, read about the first 5 pages then skipped to this last page and this thread went to

"A-trac is good, it comes stock on our trucks, so why not use it"

to someone completely misinterpreting and changing the context of the thread and saying that A-trac beleiver says :"A-trac is better, lockers suck"

its kind of like the telephone game in grade school, funny how people twist words around

You really need to read pages 8-12 and see how anyone who rationally points out simple disadvantages of ATRAC are treated.

No misinterpreting, and it's more like "how dare you say anything bad about ATRAC?"

Accepting that ATRAC is not as good as lockers and understanding why is that is a Step 1

Step 2 should consists of figuring out how to make it better then lockers. I am believer that with little effort that system can be turned into much better then lockers traction device.

I can think of two ways of doing it.

    1. Would be to do what Mercedes is doing. By installing sensors to predict road conditions before wheels get to them. Last time I heard MB was trying to use sonar technology to check for surface density and distance to predict conditions and allow computer to "prepare" drive-train before slip condition occurs.

    2. And thats just my theory: If somehow power curve can be soften it would compensate for system latency. That can probably be achived by replacing open differntial with something else like Torsen or Trutrac. Although truetrac could be not enough but maybe playing with oil viscosity to compensate a desired effect can be achieved. Sadly I dont have vehicle with ATRAC but if somebody is interested In being Guinea pig I am willing to work with them. It would require replacing their e-locked axle with regular one and installing Truetrac.

You know this thread was about A-TRAC... I never made a claim one was better over the other, only that one comes from Toyota, doesn't cost more, gets you most anywhere you would want to go, and doesn't mess with your steering ability. With all that going for it, why is it hard to accept except for lack of knowledge about it... for which we discovered to be the case here. There was absolutely no reason to get so defensive about front lockers... but I did (then) get defensive in that the A-TRAC negatives mentioned (by none A-TRAC users) were not anything we have experienced.

Maybe someone needs to start a thread called: "Front Lockers: Why do some people have a hard time accepting them?" LOL!

    A-TRAC SPOKEN HERE... ;)
