What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

This wasn't all "today" but over the last two weeks. I picked up and cleaned some 4Runner seats out of a totaled '98, installed the RS3200 I got from @BlackPearl and built a wiring harness for some rock lights i've had laying around. And i was in a huge rush to get the rock lights on because I had to make a trip to the mall to pick up Frozen 2 for the kiddos early last week.

I've done the bearings a few times. But with a 20 ton press. We've never run in to needing more pressing power. I think 12 ton would be enough... the only thing is the working space on the 20t is wider. The only thing I see you MIGHT have is the 12t MIGHT be too narrow to work in with the spindle.

But I think you'll probably be good.

 

those look 'fairly close' to tacoma SR5 sportbuckets, very nice!!

 

Right on... not ready quite yet. I still need to order a couple more things.

 

Question for those who have relocated their rear shocks.

What's a good rule of thumb on how far back from the centerline of the axle, for the uppper mount?

 

Thanks! They remind me of the seats i had in my '92 Sr5, but the OEM ones i had in the '92 pickup were even nicer than the 4Runner seats. Just thankful to have some lumbar support and side bolsters again.

 

Plug the factory vent holes on the back of the housing... sent it through some mud and crappy looking water came in through one of them left behind residue on the flat black, a fair amount of fine dust comes in through them as well i can see a layer of dust on the projectors

The nut on the back of the projector that secures it to the housing needs to be tight or else the housing will bounce up and down if you dont have a perfectly smooth idle its aluminum so dont strip it either one of mine shakes at idle the other one doesnt...

And the wires for the halo if applicable and high beam shutter... make sure they arnt getting pinched under the dust boot on the bulb or the retaining tab clip setup happened to me and my halo goes out 1/100 times

gonna need to open em up again and see what's up because theyre a bunch of issues

 

Don't bother with a press. Using the OTC Grappler is the right tool for it. Will actually work better.

I refuse to do that out of principal. You just end up screwing everyone else.

 

There is no reason you can't do it with a press. And at least a press is useful for other stuff.

No way I'd pay $470 bucks for a tool (like that) that does one thing and is rarely needed.

True, with a press you still need plates and sleeves (to make it easier), but again, all that can be used for multiple applications... not even just limited to the truck.

 

Good luck then. I don't think your 12ton will be enough. Plenty of stories out there of people's not working. I ended up just taking mine to toyota to have them press out the old ones and put in the new ones. But next time im gonna get the tool.

eh. I have 3 tacomas and brother has a 4runner. Will need it a few more times.

But coming from someone who has done a dozen mod days, along with other repairs on various trucks... I see no need to buy a specialty tool, that I'll bet many shops don't even use much.

No one need approval from anyone. I just find it funny that this is being complicated WAY more than it needs to be.

So someone who hasn't pressed the bearings (took it Toyota) says there's a bunch of "stories" about using a press on the bearings and it's "better" to use a tool they don't have and have never used, because a press is "a waste of time."

Mean while... dude who has pressed 3 sets of bearings, with a Harbor Frieght press, knows that if you don't approach it like a fucking idiot, have patients, and pay attention to what your doing... it's pretty simple.

But whatever.

At the time I did mine i did not have a shop, hell even a garage. I was using a friend's place and his press would not make the front bearings budge. Im not the only one that has encountered that either, plenty of evidence out there. Mean while my truck has no front wheels, it's my only vehicle at the time and it's taking up all the space in a friends garage. So yes, I took it to Toyota to get the bearings put in.

You have really become a new level of arrogant lately man. You need to take a step back and cool your jets. You have information to offer but most the time you're just a dick about everything.

Im sure you'll take that criticism with grace (yeah right I full expect you to jump down my throat like you do with everyone). But you're just making yourself look bad more and more than an actual helpful individual on the forum.
