washed my engine and now...

I have this chirping from under the hood, if I drive it for 10min it'll go away?? The belt looks ok, any ideas?

 

Water doesn't kill belts.
Don't spray high water pressure on the motor, drive belts

Sounds like you got water in a pulley. Some people who have snorkels and diff/tranny breathers have an issue with this.

 

hmm.. mine chirps every morning when i first start her up. I have to let it run about 5 minutes to stop it. Pisses me off since it doesnt every time i start it in the morning.

 

Once there was a sudden chirping in the cab of my truck, I soon found out that there was a fuckin cricket in the truck...

Carefully spray the bearing in your idler pulley with some sort of oil (DON'T GET IT ON THE BELT!) If the noise goes away, it's your pulley. It will slowly get worse, I wouldn't worry about it until it makes noise all the time. Run it!

it never did it untill i washed the motor, pisses me off it's still doing it, drove to work and home and it still did it for about the first 10min of my drive, i'm gonna throw a new belt on it tomorrow might not do anything but i planned on changing it anyways, sounds coming from the tensioner and i really dont wanna change it, but i dont wanna drive around in a truck that sounds like it's 20 years old either

 

While you have the belt off check your pulleys by hand, if one seems a little rough or the bearing is dry its likely your culprit.

You can remove the pulley and repack the bearing with grease if you wish. Just remove the seal with a small pick or similar and inject some of the appropriate grease. You can even press the bearings out and remove both seals if you wish to do it all the way. Press the bearing back in and your golden for the install.

I tried to source the bearing that Toyota uses but its a part manufactured for Toyota exclusively. A bearing can be purchased with the same outside diameter, but the inside diameter is greater (hole for mounting bolt) - therefore you will need a bushing or spacer such as the ones supplied with the Rock Auto pulleys for mounting.

 

Well I pulled the belt off and the top drivers idler pulley had about 1/4in free play while all of the others had none and this is the side the noise was coming from I ordered a new one and it'll be here today, gonna change it after work and ill post back

 

well i replaced one of the upper idler pulleys and slapped a brand new belt on it and..... it's as quiet as a mouse, thank god cause it was getting annoying!!

guess i wont do that again! turned into a $80 engine wash!!

I just don't. It stays pretty clean as long as you don't go through some really deep mud or something.

 

Yeah aparently the previous owner never cleaned mine either, with good reason I guess!

 

There's no problem with washing the engine, but there are a few areas of concern that shouldn't receive a direct blast of water.

 

Hindsight being 20/20 (and not being a smartass) ...... perhaps before the change out you should have done a "deep" cleaning.
