I read through the whole thread awhile back and can't remember, but has anyone tried to run the FJ case that came behind the manual transmission in their manual transmission Tacoma? I ended up with the whole drivetrain from a 2007 FJ and just got the engine swapped into the Tacoma. Ideally I would like to put the transmission and transfer case into the Tacoma but I'm not sure of what it would take to make the swap happen.

I realize that it's an AWD case but what I don't understand is how it works. When you spin the rear output in AWD only the rear spins just like a normal case. Then if you shift to 4wd it spins both outputs, like a normal case. Shift to low range and it's like a normal case. I don't see any electrical connection on the case so I'm not understanding what makes it AWD. The overall length is longer than the other cases. Sorry I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, I am hoping someone smarter than myself could educate me on the differences.

That case has a center diff whereas the other does not

It's a long video but helps explain the differences about a typical part time 4wd tcase and full time AWD. If you know how a traditional tcase works then you can skip to the second half.

I'm envious. I would love to do a 6spd manual/manual transfer case swap in my DCLB. If I remember right, aside from some wiring you'd have to do anyway to get the 4WD 4Lo lights to work, you really just need to have your driveshafts modified to accommodate the different length transfer case. Don't forget to add the FJ non-add diff tube to your front diff, too. If you're using the FJ 1GR-FE, I'd likely swap the FJ main ECU just to be sure it all talks together but, depending on your year and model, that may not be necessary.

I saw that you hadn't swapped your sensor over and was going to ask you about that.

Pull that plug out, and look to see that there's a worm gear on the tcase output. If there is, you are good to go, just swap your sensor from your taco case. If you can't see a worm gear on the output shaft, I got some bad news for ya...

If that case is from a 4runner there's a chance you don't have the worm gear on the output and you're pulling that tcase, splitting it again, and replacing that smooth ring on the output with the worm gear from your taco case.

There's a worm gear in there, but the xfer case out of my taco doesn't have the speed sensor on the output. Apparently it reads off the rear wheels. I posted that question and then found an article.

    My old taco case.

I wasn't aware that had changed. So you should be good to go then.

That's just a standard auto/marine rocker switch. I get mine on Amazon.

There is a wiring diagram on the previous page of this thread, and link to the write up from RST that I posted on page 38.

Ya me neither. I spent a good hour and a half trying to find something online about where the speed sensor was when I posted that. Like a minute later I found a site with that info. Was thoroughly confused for a bit though!

So much effort to make the truck the way Toyota should have produced them.

    I feel your pain brethren.

Thanks everyone, I just wasn't understanding how the center diff in the AWD case worked but the video explains it very well. Now I understand why that case is longer. Thanks again for the replies and dumbing it down for me to understand.

Auto Tacoma’s use the wheel speed sensors, manual Tacoma’s use the speed sensor output on the t-case, simple as that.

My taco t-case didn't have anything where the sensor should have been on the back side of the case. It had three plugs total, 2/4wd sensor, hi/low sensor, and the 6 pin for the actuator.

that’s weird. They must have changed it up then. Mine is 2010 and had that sensor in the case, I saw yours was 2013. I know the 2012 went through the facelift maybe that’s when they changed the wiring a bit??
