I don't see much sport in trapping an animal (via a gaggle of dogs surrounding it) at close range and blowing it's brains out. Unless I am mistaken on the effort it takes. I still see the dogs taking all the risk, and the hunter not much at all? How is there sport in that?

For most people that actually own the dogs it’s about the dogs themselves, training a dog to run a track that’s over 12 hours old sometimes isn’t easy. I’ve walking from the turnout point to the tree more than I want to admit helping them every step of the way. We hardly ever kill the things we catch, usually just let them go for another day, like we did Monday.

As for effort, can’t really comment on that till you’ve done it I don’t think.

Me and a bud followed a lion hunter many years ago on one of his hunts. Super fun trekking around the mountains with the dogs running lead.

Ah so a lot of it is catch and release vs killing all the cats you post? More for training etc? And don't get me wrong I know have no idea of the effort involved. Kinda nice to be able to hear your input because I really don't know. How long do tracks usually take to find one? Like you hiking all day or what? I am not against hunting by any means so it's nice to get your perspective. I think big cats are awesome creatures, just like bears, wolves and coyotes. I feel unless I can eat their meat I would have no desire nor be able to kill one though out of respect for them, unless I was threatened obviously.

It’s usually just driving roads to find where they cross. I left my house on Sunday at 10:30 pm, drove 4 hours to where we wanted to hunt and started to drive roads. Did that until it was time to turn loose (daylight) on a track someone in our group had found. When all was said and done it was about 4 pm Monday afternoon, got back home around 8.
Sometimes we never find anything and just go home and do it again the next day.
This time of year is especially hard due to the amount of snow. It was atleast knee deep everywhere we walked on this week.
Most the time yes, catch and release like fishing, but every once in awhile we catch a nice mature male that we will harvest. The one on Monday was one we would’ve but everyone that was there felt no need.
Mountain lion taste great, like pork actually, totally edible.

Depending on how long ago that was, those old timers were tough asf, being able to use a gps and say “well there 800 yards, and 2 canyons in that direction” makes it’s a hell of a lot easier

I've heard they taste great and finding one without dogs would be very difficult. There have been two this winter that were killed for attacking neighborhood dogs.
