So are y'all wearing armor, or just abrasion resistant gear? I'm riding around in a "riding shirt", jeans, boots, gloves and full face helmet.

I guess personal choice? I should probably armor up a little....:anonymous:

Colder weather I wear Aerostich Darien overpants and an Alpinestars jacket with insulated gloves. Warmer weather I wear Revit mesh overpants and an Olympia mesh jacket with meshed gloves. Both sets have knee, arm, shoulder and back armor. I just throw it on over my work or normal clothes and stash it in the back box on the bike when I get where I’m going. I have a Schuberth E1 I wear most of the time and a Bell MX9 I wear if I’m going to be doing a lot of offroad. Work boots when going to work, mid calf riding boots otherwise. I just ordered a new Alpinestars jacket that should be less bulky and able to be worn off the bike and look fairly normal unlike my current adventure style jacket.

And then post a spoiler of what happens when you fall and they graft skin from your leg to your face. Let the kids decide whether they want a full face and gear, or that.

im also not saying ATGATT.. but be smart

to be fair the majority of those guys have pads under their long pants...

and really nobody does that without years of experience and a fair share of busting their ass on dirt on grass and in parking lots honing their craft...

not advocating for less gear, but I am saying that riding a bike is dangerous with or without gear, death will not discriminate so ride safe out there!!!

I don't wear armor, but I learned to dress appropriately for the ride. First time I wrecked on a bike, I dressed light because it was during summer. I was on my way to work (45 minute commute) and it was early morning so I decided to wear a light hoody- jeans and Converse rounded out the "gear". Lost skin on my arm, hip and almost lost my big toe (converse offer no stability for your foot and you might as well be wearing sandals). Now that I know how much that hurts, I dress and ride appropriately. I'll at least wear thick long sleeves most of the time and for anything involving freeway speeds- jacket and boots. I always wear armored gloves on the bike but I've had a thing about wearing gloves for most tasks since I worked in warehouse type work for a lot of years and just got used to it.

I've had a few sportsters 883 and 1200 and ridden some bigger vtwin bikes the past few years as I've been getting into riding. Original bike was a 750 shadow phantom. Have not had any experience on any sport bikes. I rode my buddies CBR1000rr to get gas a couple times and barely hit 4k RPM while I was shitting myself haha. Lately I have been looking for a fun budget bike and I found an SV650 near me with low miles for under $2k. Thinking about buying it and learning how to ride. The cruisers don't really do it for me anymore- I want a more engaging experience rather than the laid back and relaxed cruising I've been doing.

How did you sport bike guys work your way up to the liter bikes? I can't imagine ever taking one of those to their full potential. The power is absolutely nuts

idk honestly I dont agree because these guys are real pros, I think I understand where you are coming from though as it is arguably reckless regardless of how good you are
I think these guys are mostly moving along at legal speed limits albeit with one wheel in the air the entire time

they really have better bike control on one wheel than many riders out there learning in traffic struggling to keep a straight line.

I think sport bikes get that less than ideal reputation from the people doing over 100mph on the street passing cars on the shoulder if not just splitting the lane

its usually those high speed crashes that bring out the thermal imagining tools to find the pieces scattered around the woods on the side of the highway

but yea I do agree that the typical none motorcyclist will see these people riding and think they all have a death wish and want to kill other pedestrians

self restraint and the fear of death are what I believe has kept me safe after all these years...

I have eaten a lot of shit though... crashing just about anything and everything...

that being said I am only on a 600 lol 1000cc might have done me in by now

Interestingly enough I took the exact opposite path. I had my fun on the crotch rockets and decided to trade comfort for speed.

Don't let anybody tell you that you need a 1000cc bike. The only situation in which that would be true is if you were racing for a living and all your competitors had 1000cc bikes. I had everything from 250 to 1400cc sport bikes and I enjoyed the 600 and 900cc bikes the most for their combination of quickness and maneuverability. You're right about power though, at least for the most part. I would say that the power on any bike above 500cc is nuts.

If you really want to get a 1000cc bike, and I am not telling you to do so one way or another, I am just telling you not to do it because someone calls your 650 a bitch bike, then work your way up. It is not the most cost effective, but it is the safest way, and in my opinion, really the only way to do it - not just for learning to properly control the power, but dealing with the challenges that come with handling a heavier bike as well.

Whatever you choose, enjoy the ride and be safe!
