Inreach is the better system for emergency preparedness. Just no two ways about it. Better system.

I'm a few years away from that kind of traveling. I have a high desire, but need to learn the basics, and let life settle a little before being able to travel as I'd like. Hoping for one trip this year out west to get my feet wet.

CB sucks. No two ways about it, not even sure going to install mine on the new truck for this trip, I may just use GMRS.

The good side to CB is if your group is using CB.... otherwise I agree. Plus I think the logging trucks use CB. But I should be ready to rock by then w/ HAM tech. Do you need a GMRS license for a handheld or just for a station? Either that or I can just wing it :bananadance:

o_O actually that might be a tall order. I can fit 3 in my driveway :D :D I can call around and find out, camping won't be cheap there though. You'd have minus one truck for that night though, if I'm honest I'd just sleep at my house....I'm sure the doggo would prefer to sleep on the bed for the night too.

Gmrs has sweet mobiles with insane power over CB. With a much smaller antenna.

Sweet thanks. Pretty much what I had found but the first few things and even the FCC website was kind of vague in that a handheld classified too. Guess it makes sense, just curious.

Again the only problem is if your group you go out with uses CB

I'll wait to see what we end up with for this trip before I buy. I'll keep going for the HAM license since it's good to have and it's only 15 bucks. I'll probably do the GMRS license in the same month so that they're on the same cycle. Then I'll space out equipment purchases :spending:

Don't need to tell me. I run into it 10+ times a year.

I'm at the point now where just put me in the middle of the pack and when we all come to a complete stop I'll figure it out. I don't need to roll around with 4 radios. Two is enough.

Just sucks. Biggest difference between gmrs and FRS is the removable antenna. If you could toss a mag mount antenna in and hook it up to a Walmart bubble pack radio, game over. It's all you'd need. And it'd be 1 Watt more powerful than cb. Go figure.

I have a GMRS license, but usually stick to the FRS freqs that are common for people using bubble pack radios.

For this outing we'll have some trucks with both CB and GMRS/FRS, the HAM guys are on their own :).

I will not be driving, leading/navigating and running radio relay this year.

Someone else with a dual radio can handle cross-band relay

yeah you can run 30 radios and find a group that’s using something you don’t use.

realistically other than the boonies most people can get away with phone signal. Ill probably end up with 3 radios. Bam bam gmrs and a cb and just use whatever the group I’m with is using.

unfortunately the addition of cell phones means most companies aren’t doing any more dev for radios and coming with anything new. Wouldn’t surprise me if 10 to 15 years they phase out cb and open up a few no license gmrs frequencies or something.

We already have no license GMRS: it's the 1/2 W FRS band.

I'll probably run GMRS and see if I can find a craigslist special CB for logging. ±1 mile is probably all you'd need with CB and an exterior antenna can do that pretty easy. It'll be hard to convince myself that the time investment for learning HAM enough for the license is worth it :D (I'll still do it).

I want to get a boat too so I'll probably end up with radio galore between the truck and boat

Hoping to make everything modular enough that a monkey with a wrench can pull the setup out in 5-10 minutes if I do anything mounted.

@Arcticelf 15 trucks campground anyone need hookup? I’m assuming that’s a no but before I call around. Any preference on max cost per truck? It’s probably going to be close to 40 to 50 each I’ll keep looking though. Wheels out would be around 08 to get to b52 in time.
