Nothing- My 08's ABS has never had any issues, wet or dry...Leading again to the other factors that affect the system....but that's all nonsense. So obviously the ABS is broken broken broken.

Okay maybe it was just on the '05-'07? I took it back to the dealer more than once... each time it checked out fine, and what I described was absolutely 'normal' operation for THAT model ABS.. It was crap on slippery surfaces. Again, I am not new to ABS brakes... the '01 and '10 had it... it was fine.

Here, I'm talking about DRY and clean pavement. Same failure. Not driving fast. All completely normal conditions. It's the same thing my old 4Runner did.

i for one hate abs... i was offroading and started sliding down a clay hill (my driveway lol)... if i could lock up the mud would have "built up" and stopped me just like it did in my k5 every other day... but no... the abs kicked in and i could not stop for crap and still had no steering control on mud.

another situation i hate abs is in snow... every vehicle ive had with abs has been a nightmare on snow... i think abs is for people who panic and dont know enough to let off the brakes if you get a little sideways... only accidents ive ever had involved abs not stopping the vehicle... well see how the taco does... but i will be installing a remote switch for one of the wheel sensors. if you "open" one of the wheel sensors it will disable the abs...

Is the stopping distance shorter with ABS?
No! From early commercials, it may have looked like you could stop on a dime. That instantaneous stop is not realistic. When braking on dry or wet roads your stopping distance will be about the same as with conventional brakes.
You should allow for a longer stopping distance with ABS than for conventional brakes when driving on gravel, slush, and snow. This is because the rotating tire will stay on top of this low traction road surface covering, and effectively "float" on this boundary layer.
A non ABS braked vehicle can lock its tires and create a snow plow effect in front of the tires which helps slow the vehicle. These locked tires can often find more traction below this boundary layer.

I will be disabling abs on my truck for the winter.... the same article also said that vehicles with abs are 65% more likely to be in fatal accidents... while conventional brakes are more likely to lose control with inexperienced drivers the impact speed is far less than impact with abs...

Thanks for this info. I'm going to do the same.

I've had several vehicles with ABS, but since I've had it I've never had a situation where I truly needed the ABS to save me.

I'm sure it could help in some situations if it's working as it should, but I have had situations where it activated when I didn't really need it and it caused me to feel uncomfortable about the brake action/power/sensitivity etc.

Ultimately I don't trust it. I don't trust machines to drive for me. I don't trust them to be better at it than I am in 99.9% of all situations. I'm not prepared to have it make me uncomfortable 99.9% of the time on the assumption that it'll save my butt in the 0.1% of circumstances where it would be useful.

Really easy disable method (put a switch on the wire from the brake pedal to the ABS module)

    yes
If you were accelerating you weren't getting traction (supposing your ABS is working as it was made too), thus you wouldn't have slowed or stopped even if the brakes had locked.

unless the tires were to break the boundary layer and bite a little deeper, and have snow pile up in front of the tires like a snowplow effect stopping a vehicle

I Have Posted on this site before about My Truck and the ABS Problem.

Well, today I crashed my 2007 Toyota Tacoma Sport Double Cab. The ABS Brake System on this truck is so DANGEROUS. I was not going too fast for the road conditions. I was going 10-15mph and could not stop on a slippery road. The ABS System kicked in and I could not stop. I ended up in the ditch and damage to my truck. I was so LUCKY that I was the only vehicle involved in the crash. I did not get hurt but the potential for someone to get seriously hurt or killed is so real.

This TOYOTA TRUCK's ABS BRAKES ARE DANGEROUS.

Some way us Toyota Owners need to get together and have Toyota look into this problem more seriously. I have posted on here and I have made claims on the TSB site about this problem. Toyota is more interested in my floor mats than they are about the Problem With The ABS Brake Issue on this Truck. It cann't be just my truck. Other people have posted on this site about the same problem. Does it take a Law Suit for Toyota to stand up and look at this problem.

I am going to get rid of my piece of sh** after it gets out of the body shop. It is just too dangerous to drive.

    A few bolts are different.
Ice is ICE! Nothing is going to help you stop faster. The purpose of ABS is to help the driver keep control when slamming the brakes. Short of studded tires for better traction there is nothing that can help any car stop better on solid ice. It is what it is.

The problem with mine was it would activate on loose gravel when approaching a stop sign. It was activating under conditions in which it shouldn't have been.

we've had some heavy (for the area) snow this year. the last snow event went through quickly leaving the roads to refreeze at 19 degrees.

many places were solid ice. there are lots of hills where I live.

to go down them, i put it in the lowest gear, 2H and didn't use the brakes.

oddly enough, going up a long icy incline, a guy behind me in a lifted ford attempted to pass. I saw his headlights coming up behind me, then his tail lights, then his headlights again.

Mine isn't too bad on dry surfaces usually, even loose gravel. But yeah, it activates when it shouldn't and more importantly it shouldn't take away all my braking power to all four wheels.

The people who defend the system either haven't read the descriptions of what's happening or don't care. If you're moving along on dry pavement at a low speed coming to a stop, and one wheel hits a very short patch of ice, a properly designed ABS system should not take away all of your braking power from all four wheels leaving you to coast forward out of control. That's ridiculous.

FWIW, I changed pads about a year ago (Wagner Ceramic Thermo Quiet) and noticed a huge improvement in the ABS response.
