Gas question

Hello,

I have a 2007 4cyl auto access cab. I live in socal and I have not been able to get more then 17mpg combined. I check the tire pressure on a regular, I put a K N air filter in, I drive like a grandma...NOTHING. The best I ever got was 20mpg and it was ALL highway. I've read some people with tacomas have had this problem. Has anyone one here had a similar experience? If so did you fix it? and how? I'm pretty disappointed and dealerships just give you the run around. The only reason I got the 4cyl was because I wanted to save gas $. If I woulda known I was gonna get 15-17mpg I woulda gotten a v6.

have you cleaned the filter recently? How often do you change the oil? When was the last time you changed the differential oil, tranny oil? How many miles on the truck? Spark plugs ever changed?

there a lot of info we need here more than i get crappy mileage!

i have a 08 prerunner access cab and get 24 mpg. maybe try reseting the ecu first and go from there! disconnect the neg battery terminal for a while

 

I change the oil every 3k-4k miles. Tranny oil just got changed about 2k miles ago. The car only has 39kmiles
Spark plugs were changed 9k miles ago.
Yeah my buddy has a prerunner and gets 23mpg. One would think that a 4cyl would get better mileage.

 

im guessing you are a prerunner?

doesnt say where you live but whats are your driving conditions? cold and short drives or warm and long?

also what are your driving characteristics? hard accelerating, lots of wheeling? i know you mentioned freeway driving but all this other stuff helps also

 

I don't have the prerunner. I live in Orange county CA. Its always about 75 degrees. No hard accelerating unless needed. I have standard 15" tires, i haven't done any mods or anything

 

WOW! I am sorry that totally sucks! You have a 5 lug with nothing done and getting that terrible of mileage?! If I was you I would make sure all that damn salt penetrates the frame really well and hopefully it eats away at it so Toyota can give you a new truck or something?!

If your 5 lug and what you said I have no idea what it could be...maybe someone else can help here cause I am lost lol

 

Have you taken it in and asked Toyota what they thing about your situation?

Noticed any power loss or unusual exhaust smell or anything?

 

no everything seems to be normal...It's hard to explain, but the engine doesn't sound like it's an 07 with 39k miles. It almost sounds like it has 100k miles on it. if that makes any sense...Just doesn't seem like a healthy truck so to speak. lol People laugh when i say that because its a very non descriptive thing to say, but when they hear it, the always say "ohh, I see what you mean" but its not a definitive sound. just sounds like an older truck to be honest.

 

your not throwing and CEL codes or anything either huh?

Did you do the plugs or did someone else? maybe they arent gapped properly resulting ins crappy firing and shitty mileage?

Ya I know what you mean. With what I have put mine through it sounds much much different then when i drove it off the lot.

The dealership did the plugs, I kinda think that might be the case. maybe they did them wrong. I bought the car used with 9k miles on it. Im think the person who had it before didn't exactly treat it well during the break in period..

There's gotta be something I can do to at least get it above 20.

CEL = check engine light. If the dealership did the plug change they should have the right gap but i hear of techs not even being able to tell the difference in quantity of oil between 4 cylinders and V6 engines, which there is lol. Anyhow maybe take it back and ask them to check the gap or even do it yourself...i dont think its too hard to do. Otherwise im lost on ideas lol

i say check the gap. I know what you mean about the sound... i wonder if you have low compression... maybe loose sparkplug? maybe the dealer put in sub par plugs
