You would get quarterly dividends from all 3 of those ETFs (paid in March, June, September, and December). Capital gains, what do you mean by that? That would only happen if you sold shares.

I don’t know how mutual funds work. As for ETFs, they’re traded the same as stocks. You could take gains by selling shares, or just not sell and avoid any taxes. You could theoretically buy and hold, and never sell, and never pay any capital gains taxes. A share of SPY is no different than a share of Coke or Apple when it comes to capital gains and taxes.

Oh yea, I just assumed he was talking about a regular brokerage account because he mentioned being taxed in an earlier post.

They’ve been down since futures trading opened. No big swings.

I think these swings 3% everyday is the market going from overbought, to oversold, back to overbought, etc. I don’t know much about technicals but I’m hearing those words thrown around a lot.

I'm hoping we are going to test the bottom again tomorrow. If we do I'm going to jump in. What's driving the stock market is the much larger bond market. with the rate cut the bond yield dropped to record lows. Today was all about people willing to risk moving out of bonds into the market because of low yields.

That's my guess anyway I'm not a pro

Yeah I figure we'll roller coaster around for a while until the major health organizations make some serious statements.

What do you mean? Most dividends are qualified. Treated like long term capital gains. Better than interest which is treated like income.

earnings are already taxed at the corporate level before they dish out to shareholders, which in turn is taxed again (as far as my limited knowledge is on the subject)

if I am incorrect please correct me, I still am learning this whole racket lol

The companies are taxed, then they pay shareholders, who are taxed, that’s probably the double part. With REITs, they’re pass-through, so one tax on our end, but usually a higher tax than qualified dividends.

You could always invest in a company that didn't pay taxes if that's important to you. Amazon comes to mind

REITs are 90% pass through but you pay income tax. REITs belong in tax advantaged accounts IMO.

I look at them as a hedge. If the market returns nothing for a few years, some of the mREITs that I hold are still returning 10% in dividends. They do gain in price too, just much slower than most companies.
