Icon's leak ???

I have a set of Icon's , about a year old (20k's) miles. When I was installing the new tires (last week) I saw that there is some oil mark's at the top- right under the black crown (driver side only). I clean it once and the oil is back. Based on my experience with the other truck,, this shocks should last at list 100 k's in normal roads. This is the second time since I have this shocks that I have issues with. The first time I lost most of the nitrogen an I had to fill up again. This was blamed on the cold winter but the oil leak ????. I will make a call to Icon's, Monday and let's see what they have to say. Is anyone else having this issue ???

I would not be surprise if this would happen to a guy down south. Those guys are and can do some serious 4 wheeling because they have all the space in the world. But for us, North Eastern boys, ?????.

Let's just hope that if there is really a problem ??? l hope,,. Icon's will stand behind. The shocks are a 15 months old only.

 

Looks like they're leaking at the threaded fittings..... It's common practice to lube aluminum when threading it together. It could just be some of the lube "sweating" when the shocks get hot..... I'd clean them real good and keep an eye on them and see if it gets worse. It it's just collecting some dust at the threads I wouldn't worry...

 

I've had mine for a while now and noticed some extra road soot on my driver side shaft and where it goes into the body. Probly some oily residue but who knows. I cleaned it off and haven't noticed much more accumulating.

 

I'd call Icon tell them to rebuild them or refund you because this is the second issue. There offices are in my home town good company they should do something for you if they want you as a customer. Wow I'm glad I don't live in the east all that rust in your pics.

it looks like its leaking a bit where the top cap meets the threads... send them pics and an email, hopefully theyll stand behind them

 

At this time,, there is no reason to get all alarmed. I am going to clean it good one more time and keep a very close eye on. If at the end of the day, tomorrow , I see the same thing ???. I am going to make a call to Icon's Monday.

I believe we have a Guru that works for Icon's in this forum. Maybe, if is not too much hassle for him ?? maybe he can pitch in ??

best of luck bro, i would be alittle frustrated at spending some of my own money for a product that is not standing up to normal driving, cold weather or not and leaking at just over year from purchasing...

 

I don't think that the leak is from where the reservoir is connected. The leak starts a little bit lower. Right under the black crown. The crown it self is clean.
Last time I had to refill with Nitro,, I fill it up thru the reservoir valve. I called Icon's and they told me the exact pressure needed.

Yes, this would be a possibility but is all most a year latter since I charged them. The guy that did it for me is a pro and I would be very surprise that this is the reason. Either way ,, if is a question of -one seal - only ??? then is not a big deal. Is more of an inconvenience. Remove the shock, mail the shock and wait for a week or two with out been able to use the truck.

I could install the oem shocks back but this would require an alignement -twice.

 

I have two of my friends with OME and I believe they are very good but I like the idea that i can adjust the height if wanted or needed.

 

I believe that they are, both, coilsover (coils over the shock). The difference is that one is adjustable and the other is not.

 

Nah, they'll hold 500psi, although Icon would shit skittles if they heard me say that. I watched Adrian rebuild mine, and he is a meticulous dude. I'm not saying he never makes mistakes, but it is a rare thing for sure. What people don't realize is how easy these shocks are to rebuild yourself with no fancy tools or magical knowledge. That is why serious racers use this type of shock, you can rebuild one in the middle of nowhere with a nothing more than a single allen key and a dental pick. If your top cap is loose and leaking...tighten it! Yes, they are not as maintenance free as an OEM emulsion shock, but they perform as well as 3 of those pos. Okay this vid is of a bypass shock, but a smooth body is even easier.

Yep,, is official. There is no sweat or dirt. The entire lower shock is full of oil. The shock is toasted and I am a little bit pissed. I paid a good chunk for this shocks and they let me down pretty quick.
I will try to see if Icon's can help me if not,, I am going to use all the info available in this forum and try to rebuilt it my self.
