brake question

so i'm getting ready to replace the brake pads on my 2017 tacoma. i've found two different part numbers and the pricing is quite a bit different.. i see part #

$98 04465-04090 Toyota Genuine Parts - Pad Kit, Disc Brake (04465-04090)

04465-04090 which is around 75 bucks but then found this part #

$60 04465-az100 Toyota Genuine Parts - Fr Brake Pad (04465-AZ200)

04465-az100 for less than 50.. anyone know the difference...
just want to make sure i get the right ones.. thanks guys

 

It could be different pad materials? It has been years since I had to worry about pads on cars, but there are some that are dusty and eat rotors, some that are low dust and eat rotors, some that are dusty and eat don't eat rotors, and the holy grail of low dust and not rotor eating. One of our past cars had the dusty / hungry type from the factory. The Taco seems to have the holy grail from the factory. If I was going for pads, I would go with the factory ones and not risk the rotors or have the dust.

Toyota is doing something right with the pads. No squeaks, almost dust free and incredible longevity.

I bought new pads for my '15 Camry @ 95K miles knowing with they're time had to be coming up.
Got all my shit together, pulled the driver's wheel and caliper off without even inspecting, only to find I was still sitting with even wear and 2/3 left on the pads.
Buttoned everything back up and threw the pads on a shelf. Found it worthy of note to mention to my brother at a later date who informed me he had experienced the same with his Tundra @ 120K..

 

And, we won't even mention the rear pads with the measly 4mm of material that pretty much last forever.


Our Forester seems to be similar also, but the pads are getting close at about 65k.

Toyota 04465-az100 are ceramic pads and come without new shims, your better off getting the ADVICS AD0976 pads from ROCKAUTO they are the same pads that Toyota sell as az100, the advics come with shims, these are what im getting for my truck.

04465-04090 are semi metallic pads with no new shims, basically its a semi metallic pad or ceramic pad, I'd opt for the ceramic material

I realize this was posted a while ago, but I landed here with the same question and have found answers that may help others. The difference is the option for different brake pad materials. Both have their pros and cons.

04465-04090 = Semi-Metallic (Original / Default)
04465-AZ200 = Ceramic Option which can be used instead of 04465-04090
04465-AZ200 supersedes 04465-AZ100, and is also interchangeable with 04465-35290, 04465-04070, and 04465-04090

According to Rock Auto's info on "Organic vs. Ceramic vs. Semi-Metallic - What Is the Difference?", they state that...

• Ceramic pads are Cleaner (produce less dust), Quieter, and have Longest pad Life, but are not the most powerful option.
• Semi-Metallic pads have better stopping power, but are noisier, dirtier (produce more dust), and have shorter life span. Many people also report that Semi-Metallic pads are harder on rotors and more likely to warp them.

I see contrary statements floating around the internet from people on Forums, but that is what Rock Auto says. Bridgestone also makes similar statements here: https://www.bridgestonetire.com/learn/maintenance/ceramic-vs-metallic-brake-pads/. If you need the better stopping power (e.g. for hauling heavy stuff; driving like a psycho; etc.), it sounds like Semi-Metallic pads are the more suitable option, but are going to cost you in terms of shorter pad life, shorter rotor life, dirtier wheels, and louder / noisier brakes.

I'm reading that ADVICS is one of the OE suppliers who makes the 04465-04090 pads for Toyota. They sell pads to the public, like ADVICS AD0976 (ceramic pads), but that does not mean they are the same exact material composition and performance as the originals that Toyota uses. The ADVICS AD0976 set also comes with shims, while you need to buy the 04945-0C030 shim kit separately from Toyota.
