Is this common? Having trouble finding any info about it. My truck had all the signs of a slipping clutch (the tech said it was installed backwards) so I had it replaced, 7k later and those symptoms have come back. Took it to the same shop for warranty and now they are saying it seems like the transmission is failing and adding load to the clutch, creating the slipping. They think it's one of the bearings. Any Tacoma specific info in this would be great because I am only able to find general info and I have no symptoms of a bad transmission it looks like, but many of a bad clutch. Aka slipping when trying to accelerate quickly in 4th gear. Particularly you uphill

I had an 89 Tacoma 4x4 pick-up transmission seize 2nd gear on the input shaft after loosing all gear oil and driving for hours. The bearings were still good though. That's the only Taco tranny fail I'VE ever heard of.

Gearbox stays in all gears while accelerating? Never pops out of gear? Goes into all gears fine? No bearing humming or vibrating?
From your description it does sound like a clutch worn out issue. They prolly used a crappy aftermarket clutch, what a shame.

I hear a whine but that sounds like it's coming from the engine. Probably power steering. No gear disengages. Sometimes fights reverse, but I think that's the linkage. They say they found metal in the gear oil, which is like 12k old. But I don't ever hard shift it. Like ever.

Edit: they say probably a bearing has gone bad and can hear it with a stethoscope. Which too me sounds ridiculous. If it's so bad that it's wrecking clutches I'd think it would be more audible...

You may have to get it diagnosed from a different shop then. This first shop isn't gonna want to get in there without stealing more money from you even though it sounds pretty obvious it's the clutch.
What brand did they use and did they do the whole clutch kit? New pressure plate and all that jazz?
I hope they honor your warranty man

I'm not following what tech said it was backwards?
That was the original, from factory clutch?
Then this new one has gone 7K miles?

I agree, this just sounds like a worn clutch.

    Who's fault? :notsure:

edit: if some shop told you the factory clutch had been in there backwards just go somewhere else and start over, they're lying and may not have evn replaced the clutch. Just adjusted or bled or fixed a hydraulic part.

Previous owner may have installed it himself, but it had been replaced before this one. I plan on asking to see the drained fluid.

They are replacing the clutch under warranty. Last time they did clutch, flywheel and rear main seal. I suspected a rear main seal leak that glazed this clutch in oil. Hence the varied level of slipping based on how much oil is on it or burnt up on it

The manual trans either works or it doesn't. When it fails it will be in a way that is unmistakable and it wouldn't be slipping. The only part on there to slip is the clutch, oil may be getting on there from the back of the motor somewhere.

Example my trans failed because a seal failed and I lost all the fluid. It made a massive bang, popped out of first gear and wouldn't stay in 1st, 2nd and 5th without me holding it in gear and sounded like it was full of gravel. It would also spray 1qt a week of fluid out the rear of it a week. It was my DD so I had to limp it for a month until I could get a new trans.

What a load of bollocks. If transmission is loading the clutch to make it slip it means it needs to take 100hp or so - at that power your tranny would melt in minutes. Not the first shop that tries to pull a fast one first intimidating the client and then asking for money. Shame.

Yea, completely agree. You couldn't roll down the street at low speed if it were failing/seizing up in the trans.

I can't vouch for the Taco. clutch being backwards and working somewhat, but my experience with other vehicles (ahem, back in my drinking days) and clutches is that while you certainly CAN put a disc in backwards, you'll figure it out BEFORE getting it back together. Either the pressure plate won't set against the flywheel or the trans will not bolt up to the engine because the input shaft won't have enough splines to go all the way in.

You most definately can install the clutch disc in backwards on a tacoma.

Now unless you see the gear oil drained into a clean pan you have no idea where it came from!!

Drain the gear oil look for pieces .

Bearing goes bad it changes how the gears mesh because the shafts moved

It pops out of gear might make a racket going into gear .

    and actually drive it?

That's why I left an out as I've never done it on THIS truck. I have with others though. It didn't work. I thought they did that intentionally.

Did they resurface the flywheel or put a new one in? I had clutch slip issues not too long after I replaced it and had the flywheel resurfaced. Turns out they didn't machine the step correctly (too shallow). Put another new clutch in and resurfaced it and probably has 100k on it now with no issues.

It’s gonna be your flywheel, pressure plate,or clutch disc itself.Transmission when it’s bad you’ll know and when throw out bearing is bad you won’t get it in gear in the first place.I would take it to a Toyota shop.My guess is you had a warped flywheel that needed resurfacing or a bad pressure plate from jump street which is why a brand knew clutch is slipping

They replaced the flywheel, clutch, and rear main seal last time.

The oil they showed me did look a bit glittery. But they are just replacing the clutch for free. Hopefully issue solved? But I'll have to see in the next week.
