Listed my truck on Craigslist, have had a lot of interest. One person asked for the VIN for the carfax and while that’s fine, why risk with sharing it aside from that? First time someone’s asked me for the VIN on a private sale.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

If they wanted to do bad, they would just go to dealer sites and grab a bunch at a time.

Hell I get a ton of people giving me their own vin to run a carfax for them.

If they wanted to do bad, a plate number can gather a lot of information alone.

yea, a long time ago (early internet) you could get a lot of info. easy. Then they passed laws making it only for law enf. (stalking was getting bad) now auto parts stores (and you) can get VIN and year from tags again. I don't know why but it's not taboo any longer.

You can find a shit ton more with social media alone.

You've obviously never been on arfcom; they burn scammers and the sort at the stake, but not before dragging then through rusted nails for miles beforehand.

    Seen the same on calguns.

    Oh yeah I get that.

Was just letting the OP know, as stated above, no need to feel paranoid.

If someone really wanted to get info on someone, social media would be the one easy place to turn to.

I only mentioned the other forums because I was *almost* in a group buy only for the guy to come through with a few firearms, and run with everyone else's money.

It went so far as people contacting his family members, wife, even the guys work (one person went to his job too).

    That guy deserved it though.

Just making the point that a vin/plate takes a bit more effort.

ok. Yea mentioned in another thread today about the facial recognition shots being stripped from FB and the like. I'm sure shortly as we walk into Walmart we'll get a text saying what's on special. Bad thing is, it's not scammers we'll all have to deal with. Legit business will be bad enough. Can you imagine car dealers in your head?

You're absolutely right on the google number though. Hell, some of my co workers use it but I haven't yet.

Potential buyers may need the vin or copy of title to check lien holder if any or get a loan, but if it has gotten as far as getting a loan, they are serious. Got requests for title copy all the time at HDFS.
