Ovrlnd Camper ideas and bs

I put a deposit down on an Ovrlnd camper and I am playing the waiting game. Was hoping to get ideas and firsthand experience before I have mine built. I did see yeti overlands build out. Hoping to get more ideas from others who have an Ovrlnd camper.

Contact Brian at www.goose-gear.com and have him provide a link to his Tacoma Habitat build. It is no longer on his web site. I will agree it is very extensive and expensive but does show what is possible.

 

Yes, I agree that goose gear is pretty awesome. Lookin to build something custom to get it just how I want it and to save money. Planning to use 8020 to build frames etc.
I would definitely like a full goose gear build though! Budget gets stretched with all the taco mods.

 

I think what Brian did was pretty awesome but a lot of it should be possible at a fraction of the cost by a capable DIYer.

 

I added kB voodoo bed rail caps and total chaos bed stiffeners to my truck. Should make the platform more sturdy for the Ovrlnd camper which should be going on the truck soon. I did have to grind the kB voodoo in order to fit the bed stiffeners. Not too hard to do as long as you have a grinder.

Would love more info on those bed rails. Didn’t even know those were out there! Of all the bed stiffeners out there I like total chaos the best.

 

Yeah, Total Chaos is the way to go, they are very stout for sure. I do wish I had gotten the tail gate cap as the package from kB voodoo. Whole package runs like 260 vs 190 just for the bed rail caps. Kinda pricey but the kB voodoo bed caps are a quality product. Definitely better than the stock ones.

I just picked up the Ovrlnd camper from flagstaff last weekend. Photo is on the way back with Lake Powell in the background. ​

 

I was going to get rid of my drawer system but now I’m thinking of keeping them and putting the fridge in the front of the truck bed. What do you all think?
I really like the fridge slides but not sure I want it in that position.

What are your impressions so far? Wind noise? Handling? Mpg hit? Ease of set-up/take down?

The fridge seems high for some folks to access through the side door, and if you do most of your cooking on the tailgate you might make a lot a trips back and forth.

My personal opinion on drawer systems (especially full width): the don't seem like the best companion for most of these campers. They make entry and exit to the bed more of a squeeze, reduce head clearance, can add significant weight to an already overloaded rig, and limit access to items when you're inside the camper.

I have looked at these campers in the past and like the extra interior room vs. the wedge campers, but balked at the cost when comparing options to the Drifter.

This camper is spacious. I like the attention to detail that goes into one of these campers. The company will build these custom from the ground up and they are all hand built.

I didn’t notice wind noise, however, I have lower gearing so my engine is reving pretty high at freeway speeds.

Gas mileage wasn’t great before this and I expect it isn’t better. Before I put on the camper I was at 16 mpg. Probably lost 1 mpg, I don’t drive faster than 68 mph though.

The camper weighs just over 300 lbs so it’s pretty light and it didn’t effect the handling of my truck that I could notice.

Set up and take down is quick. It is definitely a game changer when changing camp locations. I requested extra bedding height so I can leave the bedding and foam mattress in with the the top down. It’s so nice not having to put your bedding away.
I was originally looking at the assortment of wedge campers. I checked out the AT Summit wedge camper in person and was disappointed with how little space is inside when it’s popped up. The full pop top is definitely awesome. There is so much room even with the drawers. I’m just over 5’10” and I fit in side standing almost straight up. I have to duct and inch or so.

Yeah I am torn with the drawer system, I can remove mine pretty quickly if I need it to be a truck. If I build cupboards with 8020, I imagine it is more permanent. Same with the fridge slide, super convenient but more permanent. The 8020 build out would allow us to access gear from when inside the camper which is really convenient if the weather is crappy or there are lots of mosquitos.

Yes the additional features add up on this camper. Base price is 7200 and it’s very basic. Cheaper and lighter than the 4wheel camper though.

 

Yeah - I do like that it's essentially a true "shell" model 4 wheel camper upper that sits on the factory bed, so much room when it's open!

Did you order/put your deposit down in late Nov? If so that's not too bad on the build time (easy to say when you aren't the one waiting!).

Do post up more pictures and feedback - I feel like these don't get as much press as they deserve.

 

I put the deposit down early October. I got it faster than I was quoted. So that’s a plus.

The camper weighs just over 300lbs.

The camper is 35 inches tall, however, the roof is convex so it’s taller in the center. My camper is a little taller because it has the exhaust fan in the ceiling too. You can get the camper built without the extra bedding height which would make it less tall.

 

Just trying to figure out the weight factor....Dave-ress build looks rather heavy considering the rear bumper, & what would be the contents of the camper...However I don't see a sag in the rear, so there must be a suspension mod....My next question is, does the 4 cyl & 6 cyl share the same weight specs?...It seems to me that the weight of the entire build dictates the build itself....Unlike a full size pickup where its not as significant.....

 

did you have extra bedding height added? if so how much. just weighing options for my future build!
