Wouldn't recommend it on a Catch & Release only stream LOL.

In Washington State had a friend I was hunting bear with shoot a 16" cutthroat in the middle of a fire trail. It was splashing in a shallow rut with most of it out of the water. After Kelly shot it I said you know you could just used your hands and picked it up. Beaver pond had flooded over the dam and it must have made it over the spillway somehow.

At least 2 generations out there now that seem to think you should only catch and release trout. Lot of fertile limestone streams around here in the Driftless region and the DNR is trying to get people to catch and keep on many of them as they are at maximum carry capacity. And the trout can't get any larger because of it.

I do my part on those cricks, the keeper size is a slot limit so they are mostly the same size.

The look of horror on the faces of the city folks fishing around me is priceless when they see me put them on a stringer.

I prefer the fly rod give a couple of muskrat hides and a big old boar coon pelt for my first fly rod half a century ago. Had a rotted cat gut leader on it and handled like a broomstick. Come a long ways since then.

Most of our trout here in the valley are put and take. But, if you go up in the mountains the little streams hold Native Brookies. they dont get very big and are very wild. takes some skill to catch a mess of them. the meat is bright orange.acid rain from the air pollution from the populated areas play hell on them. they actually lime the cricks on the Shenadoah National Park to change the PH in the water for the health of these native trout.

We got a deal thru Costco for paid breakfast buffet (normally $20 each) each day. The food is excellent so can't pass that up. They have a bunch of things besides the traditional so I will look for it.

I grew up on those Appalachian freestone streams, @bucktales knows them. Well actually they split off the backbone and headed to the West as the Endless Mountains.

Spent 6 years in Western NC and fished all the streams I could. When I was there back in the mid 90's the scientific community identified the local brookies as specks, a different species from brookies from anywhere else in the country. Based on the lateral line much like the difference between rainbows and steelhead.

You are correct of course, spookie as hell. But that is what I grew up chasing and flipping rocks over in the crick and got my interest in entomology. What do they eat, how, etc.

When I was in Western NC they were dumping tons of crushed limestone in the steams to try and offset the acid rain. Tops of the ridges the pines were yellow and dying. The acid from the coal in the Midwest drifts East and hits the backbone of the Appalachians and dumps the moisture, including the acid from the coal combustion before they had scrubbers on the stacks.

I always let the specks and native brookies go they work hard enough to stay alive. And are one of the most beautiful things in the world IMO.

Only an hour and a half where I grouse hunt is one of the largest lakes in Ontario second only to Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake in the world. In the next year or 2 I will finally make it there to fish brookies and hunt ruff. Only a couple of lodges on the lake and areas to put in.

That is a lot of orange meat...

Both of these can be found at a Zippy's restaurant ( Hawaii's equivalent to a Denny's restaurant )
