3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

Two of the trims/configurations or two of your 12(?! ) trucks?

 

None of my prior gens, remember this is a new diff for all the 3rd gen trucks, not a 2nd gen carryover. My 16 SR5 DCLB 4WD had it, the one that got lemoned for my 17 OR DCSB 4WD which also had it. The 16 actually had the first diff sent back to Toyota for their engineers to pick apart according to my service guy. Funny now they just consider it "normal." I actually was offered a complimentary 8yr/125k platinum warranty for it after I expressed my unhappiness as a return customer on a new generation truck and concern about long term reliability. Toyota definitely has changed their tune now.

What about your '20?

 

I agree with the transmission I’ve been happy with mine, keeping it in s4 in the mountains or any hilly area seems to be the ticket for me. As for the noise it’s definitely not a deal breaker just slightly annoying, really just slightly peeved they’d charge me to put a bandaid onsomething that can’t be completely fixed. Then again the costs to do so on the scale of their business would be astronomical I’m sure. At the end of the day as long as it works like a Toyota should I’m happy. Like the person said above just gives me more incentive to get the lift and mud terrains on.

 

It's only got 346 miles on it, but so far nothing. 19 never did it either. And honestly like I said it didnt really bother me or was noticable unless really listening for it. But I could see how it bothers some people, but its not really a mechanical issue, just annoying, sort of like the ticking on the old 4.0's that freaked people out.

 

Don't be hesitant, these are great trucks.

 

For sure man. And I get it, trust me I complained and got a new truck out of the deal before Toyota decided it was normal operating conditions.

 

Wonder if I complain enough they’ll buy me a super charger to drown it out.

 

Yeah the fact that your 19 didn't have it concerns me... if this is a design issue, then all trucks should be affected, or at least all trucks in certain trims/configurations.

What trim/configuration was your 19?

I was feeling so confident about this being a design issue, and now you just flipped my world upside down again.

 

Wait that’s an entire axle never mind.

 

16 had TRD pro semas on 265/70 ko2s in c rating. I weekend wrench and knew they might claim it as the tires but also had a good relationship with my service writer who knew he couldn’t bs me. And remember that was an SR5 so different diff than the OR I had that did it too.

 

Should have said the carrier assembly I think? I’m learning as I go.

 

your good bud, ya I know there were similar options for my 11 when I lifted it had the common decel vibration, wanna day it was a drop bracket for the carrier I used not the worthless front diff one something different have to go back and look

 

6 third gens.... And I thought I was bad with 3 (1 of them totalled, one of them should have been totalled)

 

12 tacos total, this will probably be the last one, waiting on new tundra

 

Had a 2019 Tundra following me today on some gnarly trails. All stock except for skids.

Those things can move and are surprisingly flexible.
