Foregoing free maintenance = Abandoning warranty?

Asking for opinions and feedback, and I suppose some fact checking.

I don't want to go to dealerships any more for my 19 or at dcsb, which means passing on the free maintenance.

Has 9.5k miles, and coming up on my 10k maintenance.

Dealer I bought the truck from outright messed up two accessories they assembled/installed. Not trusting them with anything else. Had a service issue with another dealer at my 5k maintenance, not comfortable going back.

One option is paying my trusted non-Toyota mechanics, who said they can document things in a way that shouldn't void any warranties.

The other is doing all the maintenance I can on my own, and only taking it to to the mechanics for things I can't or don't want do. I assume that will void all sorts of potential warranty claims.

I've already installed front and back shocks myself (and my own oil change). So I assume I'm already down that path.

I know there are never-dealer members, all Toyota Service all the time members... Still looking for people's thoughts.

Do you're own maintenance, keep track of it on the Toyota owners app.

Your already doing your oil changes, that and the tire rotation that's basically all the free service does. I do my own and log it in the owner's app.

I will echo the others, the toyotaowners app is a great tool. They should have got the people that designed the app to also design Entune. :D
As long as its the Toyota care you can do your own maint. However, if you got a dealership specific program like some dealers do, they may have a stipulation that all maint. must be done at their facility. This is usually tied to a lifetime maint. program/extended warranty and only a few dealerships do this.
You should be good to go.

Doing your own maintenance (with proof) will not void any OEM warranty. Keep records and receipts. I do it with all my vehicles, each has a three-ring binder full of notes, receipts, and copies of any correspondence I have with the dealer. Never an issue with a warranty claim but I'm a bit OCD with the records..

Ordering your maintenance parts from a toyota dealer via online or Amazon should be sufficient proof.

Documentation that it was performed by a certified mechanic should not void your warranty. (Read your fine print on the paperwork you signed and it should give you stipulations)There are some dealerships that do not use the national warranty like most..However, it is still under warranty wherever you are.
My parents’ 2018 Camry was just hit by an idiot driver. They went to a different dealership and bought a 2020 SR5 Tacoma. The dealership from the Camry owes my parents (x) amount of money because they are not on the national plan even though they are a very large volume dealer. The warranty they had did not roll over to the new vehicle..

What warranty does roll over to another vehicle? I ask because I have never heard of such a thing.

They probably got some extended warranty. I have and extended only on certain parts because of all the computer garbage forced in vehicles today. If I trade in early, I have some warranty services either prorated or rolled over to the new vehicle.
They probably had something similar and was able to recoup unused/existing leftover.
This is one of the larger if not the largest Toyota volume dealers in the state, but they may not be a “corporate“ dealer?
Toyota warranty still applies nationwide nonetheless..

The only thing doing your own maintenance does is you now assume all liability for work done. That cut o ring on filter becomes your problem not theirs for example. Good luck and have fun.

Up to you but I’d rather not even have to discuss it for the first few years. Having worked at a dealership I saw people with a Warranty claim that was questioned since everyone with no history claimed they did it themselves and some guys were lying. I haven’t had any bad experiences at the Dealer and I mark my filter and take an oil sample on a white rag. In some dealerships I’ve watched the oil dripping out of my pan. I won’t use them more than necessary but I let them do my in Warranty oil changes.

The ONLY thing I go to the dealer for is the $22 annual PA inspection, only because they think I bought it there. Under 5k annual miles and emissions exempt.

I remember a guy on the Wrangler forum who Blew his engine because he reassembled the oil filter wrong ( yes, you actually have to reassemble the filter instead of just throwing a new one on) and the Dealer denied the claim after taking pics of the improperly installed part (they seemed to know what happened ).

Edit- Dam, didn’t realize the Tacoma has those annoying filters instead of the spin on. Oh well. Now I’m definitely letting them do it.

The only disadvantage, I can see, is that you will lose “Certified” status. Could possibly get you more money on trade in.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Logging my own work, with ocassional mechanic's help, with Toyota sounds best to me for maintenance.

I totaled my first 2018 that had the 75k warranty with 800 miles on the truck. Rolled it over onto the new truck. The new dealer took care of all of it. I just needed to have the old contract #. It's all through Toyota for mine, not a dealer extended warr.
