I’ve slowly been outfitting my whole new shop with tools and equipment from Craigslist and fb marketplace. That’s probably the only reason I still have a Facebook. I’ve gotten some crazy deals on stuff. It’s addicting

Welded up this little combination catch can / vacuum block mount for the truck. Then I ground down all the welds lol

 

The only downside is you have to know what you are buying and what it should do .

Have an idea what the new cost is .

Like everything else different areas are better then others

 

I can't argue with that. All I can hope is with the aid of the internet, people will research what they may buy.

The Chicago Electric, HF, craptastic is not a deal at 20 bucks. I'm sure you are willing to offer an educated opinion of an item just as much as I am.

Please don't be afraid to ask. We've spent a lot of time around the welding fields.

What's the procedure for welding zinc coated stuff?

I want to replace the coupler on my motorcycle trailer. It's currently a 1-7/8" ball and EVERY other trailer is 2". Tired of switching balls.

Do I just need to grind off the zinc or what?

 

Yep, wear a respirator while grinding AND welding.

I use a high zinc primer on evreything and I put a fan down by where I'm welding to suck the fumes away from me. I use flux core so shielding gas isnt a worry. You either have to ventilate it away from you or wear a respirator. Chug a few glasses of milk after just to be sure so you dont get the flu like symptoms.

How do?98% of people in here are just hobby mig welders. Only a few of us have taken actual weld test in the industrial environment

 

The old school welder in me wants to say respirators are for Nancys but the healthcare professional that I now am after a career change wishes someone had guided me to the risks of inhaling fumes.

We never wore anything back in the day cutting, welding, grinding, arc-gouging. Tons of galvanized cutting and welding on trailer roll-up door tracks. Never did get sick but always ran a fan.

I now see people in the hospital who can barely walk around their bed without gasping like a fish out of water. Many were smokers, some were welders. Makes me very scared of what I did to my lungs. Wear your gear folks. Good advice.

 

At least lungs are like the miracle organ!

 

I'm working through a book on welding right now, and the first chapter was all about safety and requirements for airflow in a work space. Having made my garage a hazy smokey space a couple times, I'm definitely taking some steps to work out a better system over and above the mask I have. I figure the mask only protects me while I'm wearing it, but I hate wearing it all day, so its bound to come off while I'm measuring and scratching my head, so I need to have a way to keep the shop air clean too.

 

I put some of these ~6' up in the shop walls I used to work in at the rear of the trailers where all the cutting galvanized was going on. Put a shelf under them and would set a fan on the shelf when cutting. Worked pretty well.

I work out of my garage, which has concrete walls - and dirt on the other side. So I'm looking at a squirrel cage blower to move the air around and out the garage door. I might stick a filter on it too, just to keep it from ingesting a bunch of crap.

But someday I want a shop...so those are going on my wishlist.

 

There just was never really any long term data collected.

Look at how most all the welders on The Alaskan Pipeline died from welding in those shelters .

Pure luck the Ferry broke down and the inpatient 18 year old headed to Wyoming .

Big difference between schools back in my day and Today.

I can`t ever recall fume extractors in every booth or even a central exhaust system most are common today

 

Guys I don't want to overload y'all with garden tractor stuff but most of my welding projects are related to them. I can post up more of my fab stuff but only if y'all want me to. Got one of where I fabbed a rear lifting hitch for one of my GTs using an electric winch.
