Just got a letter from toyota and its apparently about the 3rd gen tacomas rusting frame issues. Not a recall but says they are offering free frame replacement . Is this old news on the 3rd gen? I haven't heard about anything with the 2016 and newer Tacoma's until today .

If you search, you will find that the Toyota inspection is for ALL years primarily in states that use salt and corrosive street material for ice.

1st,2nd,and 3rd gen no matter what model.

    first, ask for the inspection
Second-If there are no issues is a coating that is allot like the water based paint already on it.
Third, if it rusts a 10mm hole after that, new frame... but only for a certain time and ONLY if Toyota has treated the frame.

you can jump through their hoops, or you can say f it and go get Line-X or something like that to spray the frame.

only down side is if your frame rusts after a non Toyota approved method is used, you are up the creek.

even though I live in TX, I am going to ask for all the inspection to be done, that way there is record of it, unless they tell me we can’t get paid for it.

I’m in RI and I’ve had junk frames on my 98 taco, my 2000 tundra, 08 taco and now I just got the call to inspect my 14 taco-sport! I’m not sure why they have so many loyal buyers - including myself. The quality is horrible! It’s more than 20 years of bad frames! CRs now gives the newest tacos a big thumbs down for reliability! So now they aren’t reliable (a first for tacos) and the frames may still be junk! Ridiculous

I never received a letter but I was on the phone with Toyota Customer Service and they mentioned it. How long did the letter say that you have to get the frame inspected?

I received it, and as soon as I saw that Washington state was not listed as using salt on the roads, I tossed the letter.

I read it as they are not spraying frames yet only extending warranty for frame for 12 years from purchase date and if they do offer the frames spray they'd contact owner

Not sure where you heard that, but they definitely use salt on the roads: https://www.newenglandtransportatio...tent/uploads/QPL_Updated-February-25-2020.pdf

That is the approved products list WSDOT uses. If you check here, they say "Salt and liquid chloride deicers remain the products of choice as their performance is unmatched."

Everyone calm down. “Rust” on the welds...is it just surface oxidation? Probably. I doubt it’s anything more than that, and thats just what happens to steel. Clean it off and coat it with a self healing light waxy product, I use mavcoat. Don’t use a hard coating. It will fail you.

Don’t be the guy who panics when he sees a little rust. Fix the problem. I live in the northeast, where we salt damn near 9 months out of the year, and I plan on having my truck into 300k miles/until I die. Same with the 01 tacoma sitting next it, which (besides some surface rusting omfg) is rust free.

I live in MN, had it inspected then had it treated with extra coating. They had my ‘16 for a day and a half with free loaner. Great service.
