Gimmicky or worth it.

During the re-assembly and installation of my engine I spent quite a bit of time cleaning the intake manifold and upper plenum, I was really amazed how much crap there was inside and wanted to prevent anything else from entering my new motor. I just did the 500 Mi oil change on the new motor and will check on it at 3K miles. Hopefully it will keep crud out of the upper plenum and throttle body.

 

Catch can? Did you hook it up to the pcv valve?

 

Yes, its hooked up. On the bottom of the can there is a ball valve to release any excess/build up that may be present.

I've run one before. It caught a lot of crap that I was glad wasn't going through the intake/combustion process. I believe that it helped keep the majority of gunk out of the intake and helped lengthen the life of the Catalytic Converter. Although I have no clinical proof of this.
At least, I don't see where it could cause any harm. (As long as you remember to empty it. LOL)

There are a lot of folks on this forum that don't think that they are worth it.

In theory it sounds great. On paper, great. Report back and tell us what you found.

This engine doesn't SEEM to have much problem burning the crappy vapor and is very forgiving but this can't hurt.

 

After spending 8 hours cleaning that crap in a cold garage (20ish), sniffing Xylene and going through gloves every 15 minutes, I don't ever want to do that again.......Besides, its shiny

 

I have one, but I wouldn't wanna spend more than like 40 bucks on it. Got mine off ebay for like 20 bucks. Seems to work just fine. Not sure how well a $150 one would perform better than a cheapo.

 

They are good for a vehicle with some sort of FI. Pretty pointless on a NA truck. I’ve run them before in my 03 cobras, but they were supercharged.

Block is reconditioned long block from Yotashop, so pretty much everything was replaced within. Decent coin but the on highway results are great.

 

These motors last hundreds of thousands of miles 100% stock, without catch cans or any of these other gimmicks.

Honestly, I think that $150 would have been better spent on some engine oil and filters.

 

I can see a oil catch can on a old tired engine with lots of blow by that you need to empty the can every 100 miles .

Although if you have problems with the new engine the can will always be full so in that respect it might be worth it.

 

you overpaid.
catch cans are non-debatable worth it, over the long haul. non-debatable.
efficiency is the watchword as the closer to new[cleaner not clean] the more efficient the flow and that affects downstream as well.
do u need one to run hundreds of thousands of miles in a toyota, uh no-

I put one on my 1997. I empty it every 2 oil changes, it doesn't fill up. But its obviously working.

I used an oil oil/water separator from an air compressor with some copper steel wool stuff to help catch the vapors.

 

I made one with an aluminum water bottle, stainless pan scrubbers and some fittings I had in the garage. Unless you have forced induction I don't see the need for one with these engines. At least not anything over $50.
