1st Gen - Fox 2.5 Front and Fox 2.0 Rear; leafs?

For the leaf springs, there's a good chance you'll have to cut the bolts holding the leaf springs in the front. So make sure you have some replacement bolts and nuts from Toyota.

 

Funny, I had thought about that.

Might just put off my install to a later date

Unless someone has the exact dimensions off hand for replacements? There's an ACE hardware nearby and they have grade 8 hardware.

 

Here's the part numbers if that helps

How do you like the Fox and OME leafs? I am looking at doing the same thing and want to make sure the 2.25 lift of the leafs wasn’t to much for the rear shocks.

 

Funny that you ask and bring up an old thread lol I'll get back to this later as I've shared my comments on this setup multiple times.

 

sorry if I’m asking the same question people have asked a million times. I haven’t found anyone that said exactly what I need to know.

 

So to answer your question, the leaf pack will easily outflex any shock that can be installed in the factory location.

Reason being, the most travel you can get out of the rear is about 9" with short/custom bump stops. This is done with Bilstein 7100 short body reservoir shocks, or a specific set of Bilstein 5165's if I recall correctly. Not much information on this but I did a lot of research to figure it out.

Back to your question and my answer; what's readily available without spending an arm and a leg are shocks limited to 8" of travel...this includes Icon, Bilstein 5100, Fox 2.0, etc.

To protect your shocks, you must install extended bump stops as I have below -

After I installed my Fox shocks, I drove around on them for maybe a week or two. I found them to be overly stiff, even though at the time I had a rear Trailgear bumper and 32" spare tire.

I tested my theory about the Fox's valving because even though I was told to remove a leaf from my Dakar pack, something told me otherwise.

Low and behold Bilstein 5100's -

My suspicions were correct, and the Bilstein's valving was perfect for me.

It only became a bit of an issue for me (personally) when I went offroad and fully loaded up for camping. Even though the Fox are valved to be a lot more stiff (good for off road), they felt amazing when I carried my tiregate, bed rack, and roof top tent.

Unfortunately though, a seal busted on my rear passenger shock so I installed the Bilstein's once again.

If you're going to be heavily loaded up, then go ahead and get the Fox 2.0's. If you're going light weight, and want a decent setup for off road while still being able to enjoy long spirited drives on pavement, get the Bilstein 5100's.

Just ensure you get extended bump stops with either shock.

As you can see (bed rack and roof top tent uninstalled, in storage), my truck is pretty heavy.

If you're going with the direct replacement shocks meant for a 1" lift, you'll need to raise your bump stops a bit more than mine.

My shocks are universal shocks that are an inch longer than the 1st gen direct replacements.

 

Which bump stock did you get?

Edit: I am picking up the shocks tomorrow, I think they are direct fit. I will let you know when I have them.

 

Wheeler's super bump stops.

They offer spacers that you can add, I run it without spacers.

You will also see a bracket on my brake proportioning valve. You can make one yourself to help with load sensing to even out the braking a bit since you'll be lifted.

 

Wow great post! And glad I saw it as I’m about to by new F/R suspension and those Fox 2.0’s were what I was going with but if they’re to stiff for day to day on road then I better Re-think the situation.

 

What's funny is not only did I swap out my rears right away, back and forth again, I'm also getting rid of my Fox 2.5 fronts

 

You don’t like the Fox 2.5’s either?

 

I do, a lot, but I went with regular travel Fox 2.5

Great shocks for going off road but I have bigger plans so I got King 2.5 in extended travel.

Being too lazy to send my Fox for a new bushing replacement (this limits extended travel)

 

I was throwing the same idea around with the Kings too, and also maybe relocating the rear shock mounts, I know a guy with some Fox 2.5’s and he really likes them, so if you decide to sell your 2.5’s lmk.
