Dear 'ole Dad's saying for that was 'it makes you a two time loser'.

I'm not saying it was original to him. Just that I recall him saying it often, and he was the only person I've ever heard say it. He was in the auto business all his life, in various ways. And very successful at it too, based on happy customers (how's that for a different concept?).

But my Uncle was the banker, (also very successful, also based on happy customers) so maybe he got it from him.

I also got married at City Hall! We spent a few thousand but that included a 5 course meal with wine for 20 people afterwards, a photographer, and an acoustic guitarist at the ceremony.

I never added it up but I think the entire thing, including rings, suit and dress, and honeymoon in Mexico all inclusive was about $10 000 Canadian.

The OP shouldn't feel bad. If you haven't done stupid stuff with money i'm calling you a liar.

I've done stupid stuff with money. I've incinerated more money with cars, guitars and mountain bikes than I care to admit.

I mean shit last night I just put down a deposit on a custom mountain bike frame with an 8-9 month wait. I tell myself this will be the bike to end all bikes for me, but who am I bullshitting.

Live below your means. Always pay yourself first. Most people would be amazed how much money they waste every month on needless things. Ie: cable tv, Netflix, Amazon prime. Eating out, every kid has an iPhone, etc. has nothing to do with making large amounts of money, it’s about being responsible with what you have. They average American has gotten to used to money in money out and aren’t willing to give up needless items to get ahead and be financially stable. It’s just a mindset, it’s truly not hard.

Question: If you buy a vehicle for the base price whatever that may be. (What it’s listed as) then you have to pay taxes on it which is going to equal obviously more than the asking price, do you include those taxes in “What you paid for the vehicle?” So if someone asks what you bought it for are you saying the price before or after taxes.

All in for the cheap wedding. City hall, 5 dollars bands, bag of McDonald’s, drive to a camping area for the honeymoon. It will be 39 years in July.

Pretty simple. It does not happen over night. You live below your means. Force yourself to put X amount into saving (investments) each paycheck. Reduce your monthly expenditures of things you really don't need. Work another job to increase your income to build the emergency fund faster.

Some prefer to live pay check to pay check. They have the big flat screen tv, cable/satellite service that is more than the basic, highest speed internet they can get, streaming service like Netflix, latest smart phone, rarely keep a vehicle beyond 3-4 years, spend money on mods for the vehicle, eat out often, etc.

Amazing what you can cut out or reduce till one is out of debt. It is all in what ones priorities are.

One small point of clarification: The lender can only charge you interest on the money for the time you have it borrowed. By making half of the payment early, you owe a little bit less in interest. On a short term loan, it may not add up to much. But on a 30 year home mortgage it can add up to something.

So yes, he has the same amount of money going out, but with this change, he'll have (slightly) less money going out long term.

Tell me about it, I have a full custom Seven Cycles Titanium road bike and a full custom Serotta Steel with Carbon rear. Of course each HAD to have a Chris King headset. Not to mention my other sub $5000 bikes. Worth every penny.

I saved over $20,000 by never buying Cable. People ask me how to get ahead but they never want to follow my advice. Go ahead, enjoy another $12 beer. I tried to help. Debt free since 06, and I’ve had lots of crappy jobs in my life.

Bikes are like tacos, the upgradeitits is a real disease. But, no other bike can satisfy me like my Santa Cruz nomad 4cc with onyx hubs on cArbon wheels, coil rear shock, etc..

You're being a bit rough on Netflix. We went to Netflix because it was cheaper.
    Netflix- $12
    Cable- $100

Yes but you need to add in your internet access cost. Netflix won't work without it.
I should have been more clear. People will have cable (max package) and netflix or some other streaming service. Then wonder why they have no spare funds.

Or a truck payment they apparently can’t afford. Better yet, still having vehicle payments while spending hundreds-thousands on expensive mods.
