used a new, equally shitty hf clamp. i'll know if it's holding if there are no new drips in my driveway.

Nothing like a quality clamp. Go to Napa and get a good one. I learned what the difference was between crappy and quality clamps when I was trying to install the motor in my rock crawler. I now have a bunch of useless crappy clamps.

 

Give them to assholes on the trail that need one.

 

Still dripping! Definitely need a good stainless clamp.

 

May not be the clamp. In my trials about 1 in 5 crappy clamps would work ok. Something to do with the quality in metal but the bad clamps would usually squeeze funny. Good clamps don’t seem to have the same problem. YMMV. Good luck!

 

Ya that's definitely a good one. You tried la perla in Hamilton city? I can not pass it without stopping. Gets me every time.

 

Are you sure it's leaking from the clamped surfaces?

 

i hope so. i haven't been able to get a good seal on the diff breather to rule out other possible leak locations. the leak appears to be coming from the breather or nearby.

 

You could go so far as to add engine dye then use a black light to find it.

 

I'm pretty sure it's the breather tube. It looked to be leaking from the tube when I put a new clamp on today. The new clamp went on straight this time but I don't think it is on tight enough. I think a better clamp will be easier to secure.

If it turns out to be leaking from somewhere else the truck will go back to the gear shop for warranty repair.

 

What's interesting is it appears the diff breather tube is meant to carry oil when the diff gets hot and pressurized, then it settles back in the diff housing when the truck is cold.

This explains why some guys have seen oil shoot out the breather end after changing the oil - the excess climbs up the hose and shoots out all over the engine bay.

 

Have had this happen and it literally stinks up the driver side of the truck.

The pinch-and-roll technique is certainly used more frequently, but the backwards fingernail scrape works wonders when the instance calls for it.
