Did a little more digging – I think I'm going to go with a round 12v fan installed on the roof. It's small, moves 100 CF/M and should work with the tent open or closed. It will require leaving one floor panel out but that's not too big of a hassle.

I installed a Marinco day/night. It’s solar. I had some headaches at first but it seems to be working now.

it’s footprint is smaller than the big square ones other guys are installing so if I want to change it out I can.

I like that I can leave it ‘open’ and on even while driving.

@slowboater that definitely seems like the easiest option – so nice that it doesn't require any extra wiring! Are you securing your tent fabric in some way or just letting it hang down?

Now it’s hanging down but I’m going to cut some 1x6’s to fit and hole everything up out of the way.

Nice, that is what I was looking at before @2ayne and others did the big square ones. What’s it like on the inside after install? Does it hang down much?

I like the idea of that. Where did you get that?

Just a part of the peanut gallery here, but if you're buying the GFC platform in the first place- which is not intended to have an option for side windows because of the design- why spend the money on something that you're going to hack apart anyway? I mean, wouldn't have been cheaper to buy a snugtop or something and then mounted an RTT instead?

Hell, it may even be cheaper, especially with a used top.Your money, I just don't understand the logic.

I've done that: ARE topper + Alu-Cab gen 3 tent mounted on top. For me, the ability to access the tent from inside the bed is a game changer. I like to stand up, change, etc without having to go outside. It's worth it to modify slightly in order to get that functionality.

The reason I was considering side windows was purely a ventilation-while-driving issue. It seems like that need can be met with a solar or 12v circular fan, which is pretty great.

The GFC is a much simpler combo than a shell and RTT. I can close up camp in half the time of my buddies with soft RTTs.

Fair enough, I was just curious. Those are absolutely logical answers lol

(I was talking about the GFC RTT though, not those other things.)

At that point the cost is very similar and the integration is so much more useful.

There’s a fancy cover for the inside that I haven’t installed.

That was my initial conundrum. The old one's I had (10+ years ago) would run non-stop during the day and all night for a couple of years until the battery died. Then they just ran during the day.

I installed my first one of these a couple months ago - and it just didn't work worth $hit. I contacted Marinco and they sent me a new one within a day.

This one seems to be working well - now that I've got the battery fully charged. But, I do shut it off every so often to let the battery top up.

I haven't had it long enough to unequivocally say that I love it. If it holds up like my old ones I know I will.

It does make a difference in the dampness back there. I keep the dogs kennel there and it can get a bit moist when we're in cold areas.

Digging up a post from a year ago but wondering if anybody knows who the GFC window supplier is? I'm getting ready to start work on building my own GFC knockoff and am trying to source windows. I live in Portland so this post caught my attention, it would be alot easier to drive across the river and pick some up rather than ordering online (which is proving hard to find anyway)

    Thanks!

Perusing the inter webs I had a feeling it was them. Looking at the website it looks like they can pretty much make anything you want. I played around with the online quotes last night and it was in the $2-300 range for fully custom 1 off 12”x36” windows.

The only catch is I plan on gusseting my spaceframe differently at the cab with corner gussets instead of the big “V” GFC does so I can run the same size window as the rear door against the cab. Gonna do a slider on the cab window too so the pup can get alittle ventilation. With these differences my experience might not translate super well to the GFC guys but I’ll be sure to report back once I get there.

    I'm here for the memes
Hey all, well I got out of my tacoma and into a fullsize truck now, (2012 Tundra DC with 6ft bed) really loving it so far and for sure decided that GFC is going to have to be a must on this build. I found an XL local to me in SoCal for sale and was pretty stoked to say the least of checking it out. I got a message from the guy the night before saying that "rear hatch hinge" broke on him. When he said this, I was thinking about the locking mechanism to close the doors on the sides and rear, which is no big deal to me but when I arrived I found the whole rear door sitting to the side of the truck and saw that it had split right down the middle of weather stripping hinge. I understand why GFC did this, but don't. It's an easier way for water to stay out, I get that. But to have failures from it and them still producing the same system kind of system bothers me. I kind of put that part to the side while still checking out the camper. (He is in contact with GFC and getting it resolved).

I was honestly very impressed by the build quality of the space frame and the actual camper. The owner of the camper bought it off of a guy who was selling his rig and offered to just purchase the camper. Obviously he has it now, but he doesn't have info on it for which number camper it was. I am going to assume that it was an early model camper due to the material. It was almost like the same material you would use for a bounce house o_O The vinyl was pretty dirty on the edges from opening and closing it and looked like it was going to be a little tough to get that off if I wanted to. Is it easy to order a newer material from GFC and how much is it if anyone has done it?

I was ready to put a deposit on the camper because originally I thought that the locking mechanism just broke but seeing the whole door to the side really threw me off. Would appreciate any feedback to those that had this happen to them or opinions on how I should approach this.

Damn, that comes down a lot more than I thought into the GFC. I'm guessing it's made for thicker boat material. But, if I'm going to hack the two bed squares anyway to create the space, like others have done, I guess it won't be so bad. How secure does it feel with those bolts resting up against the inside of the roof material? Do you think washers would spread it out a little better?
