ADS Off-Road Racing Shocks - Information, Pictures, & BS Thread

Not sure but I’m trying to come up with a solution. I already have a decent rake, around 2 inches or so.. and that’s after removing an overload spring. I noticed all my buddies with Kings run way less preload with more lift

 

What spring rate are you running?

 

650 per ADS recommendation. Don’t really want to bump up to 700 lol. Don’t have a bumper/winch or steel skids

Only thing I can think of now is limit straps. Which really shouldn’t be necessary

 

What bump stops? UCA?

 

SPC and superbumps front and rear

 

Supposedly they have an internal top out/ compression spring upgrade

 

I’m running 700’s, but with only 1.5” of lift and don’t get the topout. But hearing this stuff makes me nuts

 

When was that upgrade incorporated? I just recently purchased them a few months ago

 

im running 700's with 2.25" of lift, icon billets and durobumps and get a slight thud when i go over bumps like a parking lot bump slowly, ive been explained this is just the coil getting back on traction as soon as it can, but other than that mine feel great on and offroad especially with clickers

 

I'm on 700s with 2.5" of lift and a ton of preload (close to 3" on the driver side) because my springs are old. I dunno what you guys are talking about.

 

It’s like a harsh thud, as if the shock is fully extending. Happens quite often for me, not sure why. Maybe I’ll send ADS an email

 

Yeah my shocks are old, have no top out protection, and are 12k miles since last rebuild. The only harsh thud I experience is from hitting the bump stops. With the 8-10 inches of travel stock geometry provides (I forget if it's even that much), you have to mind where you're ride height lives in that range. I like to keep mine in the middle for ride comfort reasons. For example, If I have 3-4 inches of wheel droop from ride height, then any pot hole or drop more than 3-4 inches I'd rather take at slower speed to allow time for gravity to drop my truck back into my travel range to absorb the hit. Stock IFS geometry on our trucks ain't great, but it's workable. Coilovers won't turn your Tacoma into a trophy truck, rather they allow for different and improved damping within the travel range.

You know, one reason you guys might be experiencing harsh top-outs, is because ADS's stock valving might be softer compared to other manufacturers. So if you run preload, there isn't much damping the spring decompression. Might explain why they ride so nice and cushy until you droop out. I don't know, I'm just thinking, not sure if that makes any sense.

 

Do you think getting them re-valved would be beneficial? Not trying to destroy them topping out so harshly

 

This this this^^^ Please everyone make sure you're actually topping out and it's not your tire losing contact with ground and regaining it quickly, or too high of tire pressure making everything feel thuddy. Would suck if they changed up the shocks based off peoples misinformed feedback

 

IMO - just put on limit straps. They solve the harsh top out.

Better for your shock in the long run too, as you shock will no longer be your downtravel limiter.

My shock is leaking from the top. Is something not tight? Should the hose joint be sideways?



how do I tighten that without removing the shock?

 

Damn that really sucks. Going to have to be a pretty specialized tool...things were hard enough to tighten when they were uninstalled.

I had one that was not tight either. Then need to be tight (obviously)
