    Question: is there supposed to be some type of fat o-ring in housing where the plug goes?

    Yes, it comes with the replacement cartridge.

    Not sure why there is ANY debate on this "mod". If you've changed your own oil just once, you'll notice how vulnerable that plastic housing is to breaking, be it from your hulk-like torque or from on/off-road debris. I'll spend the $20 and do the upgrade.

    Doing both my wife's 16 T4R and my 18 Taco in the next week or two.

    Agreed, I just double checked and they are in fact in stock. The low price guy who currently has the buy box for $19.49 has really slow shipping, but if you click on "more sellers" you can see a Prime seller has it for $23. Either way, plenty of sellers have it in stock and this is the genuine toyota, not the Dorman or other aftermarket housing.

    That's the plastic one. Both the plastic and aluminum versions have the same part number, so it's confusing.

    How can you tell? Have you tried ordering from a bunch of the sellers and gotten a plastic one?

    What is pictured there is the metal one and I don't see any notes from the sellers saying you'll get anything different. Could also order one and send it back if they don't send you the right one (make sure it is a Prime one as those are super easy to return if needed).

    Yep that looks like the same as the link in the OP. Did you get a metal one when you ordered through there?

    Also, as an aside, did you get the metal plug part too that seems to be pictured with some? From some of the comments/reviews it sounds like it should come with that as well?

    Yes I ordered 2 from this link, one for my truck and one for my wifes GX. I only ordered the metal plug for my wife's GX because they do not come with it. On my truck I just swapped the plug over from the plastic housing to the metal one.

    I can tell by the picture and that is definitely not the aluminum one pictured. The link I posted in my previous comment shows the aluminum one. If it's not aluminum in the photo why would you assume that's what you're buying?

    It is possible that they are showing the wrong one in the thumbnail, which happens a lot on Amazon.

    That is clearly the plastic one, actually, it's a combination of plastic and aluminum. The other one is ALL aluminum.
