The Mojave is awesome! So much to see.
California is awesome too, but too many people and overbearing politics are bringing it down...

You are not kidding! I also love that little portion of the Great Basin you live near, such an amazing place! You know though, the people thing is really just in the areas that get hit by popular websites, we’ve spent weekends in places that never had others within sight- you just have to go to where the roads get bad and don’t have a Instablam presence.

I like the description of your setup. Pretty nice indeed.

The batteries, for now, are going to be 2x 6V Sealed Lead Acid 5AHr. I know and realize the amp hour is lacking, but I also know these can handle a pretty good current draw from experience. Your battery alone weighs about, what, roughly 25#'s? BUT, that thing should definitely run you pretty good for quite some time!!!:thumbsup::fistbump: I like it!!! HAHAHAHA, MY battery setup, I'll probably get a couple TX's out and DONE!!!:laughing::laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl: I'm trying to run low power as much as possible anyways though. I know for sure I can run low wattage output power with these... again, from past experiences.

Right now though, I'm building with what I currently have available to me. I was thinking about running an actual separate battery box itself? So, something like your type of battery that has the capacity is likely the same route I will be taking. But that is the reason for also having the ability to plug external power to my radio box.

Anyways, as it sits right now is how I'm going to "Field Test" my radio box. I've already done SOME preliminary tests, but they were quick tests really. I want to field test what I have as my setup now so that I can take "notes" on how I can add/improve my setup. I'll try to take a picture of my tripod home-built 2m antenna setup when I get a chance.

Here are some pictures of my pigtail setup I was talking about earlier:

This is my old scanner antenna from my handheld that I still have. It RX's REALLY GOOD!!!
    Scanner_antenna_bed.jpg

My old Radio Shack Pro-66 that I still have. It's an analog 800MHz non-narrow band scanner. I don't have any trunking scanners yet. Just too expensive for my current budget. For example, I'm currently fixing my truck right now... here and there. I just replaced my radiator that had hairline cracks in the upper tank and just NOW ordered some lower ball joints and going to replace my upper and lower ball joints along with my sway bar end links. I want to eventually get a LCE long tube header? There's quite a few things I want to do to my engine still and, as much as I like messing with radios, I'd rather work and spend money on other things and just work with what radios I have. I have other radios as well... just not pictured.
    ScannerHH_PigTail.jpg
    My Yaesu VX series... I have a VX-5r and a VX-6r
    HAM_HT_PigTail_hood.jpg

    HAM_HT.jpg

    HAM_HT_PigTail_bed.jpg

Anyways, that's just an example of what I can do with that type of pigtail setup. Mainly meant to be used when in a HQ/stationary type setup.

Your battery box sounds like a great setup, you should have plenty of power with it for your HT’s. Mine is a brick due to using it for my refrigerator and compressor, in addition to charging my camera, phones and high amp items like laptops and drones.

Hey- are you using APRS? I’m trying to set it up for my rig but am not too versed in what stations/repeaters are best to use off road. If you are, PM?

OK- back on topic- I also use the battery to charge my metal detector battery.

Hey- anyone need a good deal on a Equinox 800 and can pick it up in Golden Valley AZ? There’s an established member on the Nuggetshooter classifieds who needs the cash and is taking offers. I’d jump on it had I not already bought a GM...

I don’t know, but it includes a drive to Golden Valley, isn't that worth it? :) I think he’s just trying to sell it out of necessity, so he’s trying to get offers.

i also found a guy trying to sell a GPX5000 on CL for $2500- thats kind of scary.

Ah, then if he wants a nice Nox, he should check it out.

By the way. are you going to get the new 6-inch coil for yours?

What have you heard about the 6-inch coil? Would it really put it in the same realm as a GM for small stuff?

im thinking maybe I should have gotten one too- you guys have been having fun getting coins and stuff.

I watched one YouTube where the guy bashed the 6" because he thought it was picking up metal on the surface a foot away. So I bought one.
I haven't used it yet, so no comment.
I don't know how the Nox does on gold. Not sure I will go that route as I have three other gold machines. I bought mine primarily for coins and relics.

Primarily a GPX-5000. Sometimes I use a Gold Bug II, and not often I bust out the Garrett ATX.

So I did manage to get out today after work to local BLM land that has a bunch of old lode mines on it, none of them really did well except the Good Hope Mine which closed quite a while ago. Most of the mines have been closed and filled in by BLM due to being close to an urban area. Some idiots were jumping the tailings with their quads and bikes and falling into the shafts behind them. :facepalm:If you see a big pile of dirt, you ought to know there may be a big hole around it somewhere!

I poked around some areas were quartz veins were exposed and crumbling, but got skunked. Ran into lots of junk and hot rocks everywhere. That’s just a piece of clear quartz, I didn’t actually detect it, and there’s also concreted piece of rusty whatever metal part in there too. But it was a nice day out, and a great way to spend a long afternoon! Thank you daylight savings time!

    Oh yeah I found a aluminum nugget!!:bananadance:

Ok, well Al or Au, whats the difference after you take off a few protons? :) it was kind of weird, no sign of charcoal anywhere so it must’ve washed down from a burned vehicle or melted beer cans from a campfire or something?
