Driving a loaner SR while my fogged up ‘20 Sport taillights are replaced and I am pleasantly surprised with how quiet the 4 cyl engine is and the smooth engine idle. Power is not too bad.

There is a reason that the old school Toyota 4 cyl 2.7 is the standard engine in many new Toyota trucks globally.

I’ve had both and I like both... I do not remember the 2.7 being SO quiet... I do remember the 2.7 sometimes sounding like a diesel. The 3.5 has ton in different sounds..

Although I ended up with a 3.5, I test drove a few 2.7's. For normal everyday driving there is not as large of a power difference as some on this forum would suggest there is. The 2.7 is a darn fine engine.

Had the 2.7 in my 08', great motor and trouble free for over 100k. I beg to differ on the power difference, i notice the extra 100 plus horses in my 3.5......

The 3.5 sounds like the 3.0 diesel Jeep is using. Lots of ticking/chatter

For a DD, I went with the 4 banger. Driving close to 80 miles round trip to work everyday, Im averaging 26ish mpg. I seen high 27 close to 28 after 5k into the truck. 90% of my drive is 60/65 mph so i'm more than pleased that the 2.7 is what i needed for work and hauling my kayak around on the weekend. I had slight buyers regret getting the 4 banger but as time went on, I understood I really had no need for the V6. If I needed a truck to haul with I would of went with a full size to begin with. For it being quiet compared to the 3.5, it is but I would suspect that would be opinionated.

The 4 cylinder in my 07 Tacoma sucked compared to the one in my 20. To be fair the ones in the newer Colorado are also great, but they don’t feel like they have 40 more HP. I haven’t driven my Tacoma much but even without being broken in I rarely go over half throttle or over 4000 rpm.

Yep, my '96 2.7 has 414,000 trouble free miles on it and still going strong.

Just curious. Why did you need a loaner to have taillights replaced? Should take about 20 minutes.

I have been trying to convince my nephew that this truck would be perfect for him. He eventually wants to buy a GMC Sierra.
It's his money and his choice, but the 4 banger Tacomas seem great, semi cheap, work trucks that are dependable and you can beat the crap out them.

I also want to drive one for fun. :)

The 4-banger is perfectly fine, but the 3.5 sounds a lot more satisfying.

I love mine. The only time it sucks is when I'm up at altitude and have to floor it to go 45 lol
