What a nice couple days.... :)

Gave the truck it's spring bath.
First time a wash mit has touched it since before Xmass.
I had thought the finish on the truck was starting to show it's age,
but it turns out it was just the spray wax from the coin op was just starting to build up.
Most of the micro scratches and swirl marks just washed away. :bananadance:
    Gotta love these new(ish) coatings.

I'll wait for more consistent weather then give it an Acid wash and a quick buff to bring it back to show quality. :D

Front Facia is showing some micro pitting from rocks and gravel.
And down in front of the wheels on the front facia there are a few drag marks from branches but looks no not have made it through the clearcoat so I'll have to hit those with 3000 grit before it gets polished again. Might just wrap that facia with something like Xpell as it's a high wear and impact area.
Notice the Ecoat on the Warn bumper has been scraped off in a couple spots too.
Another thing for the todo list.

Should have washed it before the meetup....
but figured if it was too shiny and nothing that looked like a scratch I'd be branded a Mall Princess.

Only rig at the meet I didn't like was.... the minivan.... I think @Norilsk had his mom bring it so his tires would look bigger! :crapstorm:

Too bad they didn't start that jobsite next door a little later.... would have been handy to have a mud pit at our disposal.... :) :mudding:

We should have done a convoy over all the snowbanks at the back of the parking lots... Had the drone take footage of the winter mall crawl trail.

@Shveet that patina on the SSO slimline looks really good actually. Sliders, rear steel bumper and a backrack all with the same raw steel patina would look sick clearcoated. ,.

It's neat seeing all the different projects we see pictures of online, in real life.

    Nice trucks and nice people...

For all those that didn't/couldn't show... don't worry we talked shit about ya the whole time...

Surprised at how many people showed up on a -7 Saturday parking lot meet and greet.
Summertime ones should be real interesting.

This group on an off road trip will make all but the most vertical trails doable... with all the winches and max-trax type things, we could cross the everglades...

Clear coating it was the original idea, as i got the inspiration from https://youtu.be/tKC7ks8xIqg?t=97

    upload_2020-3-9_22-24-0.jpg
where just before that bumper was completed, the fellow said 'na, just clear coat it'.
and IMO, raw steel looks really great if patina'd correctly.

But that then transformed into "Hey i like the welds but what if I gun-blue'd the entire front bumper? I'd be a genius to do that!" since i would be chemically tinting the steel and not coating over it to hide all of the nice welding and grinding marks

well apparently i never added enough of the chemical and it wasn't potent enough to properly blue it and i ended up... gun.. bronzing it?

surprise surprise, i forced a layer of rust onto it and then clear coated that.
:bananadead: doesn't help that the clear coat was easily pressure washed away.

Either the Tremclad clear coat is actually garbage, or i really screwed up at metal prepping, clear coating, and everything possible.

i want to redo it all, the exact same way but make sure i don't screw up the gun-blu.
I just say i'll coat it in line-x because i'm spiteful to how it turned out.

I do patina's all the time at work on brass, mild and stainless steel. you gotta cleat coat them when done, or they keep reacting. If you do a gun blue, and dont wash it and clear coat it it will go brown. Both of these pictures are done with the same chemical. One is done right with a gloss clear coat, the other is done wrong with a satin clear

Like this (someone else did the finish)

Properly done you can get a cool finish. The client wanted as much texture as possible on this.

If you need tips I'm more than happy to help. The process is pretty simple, just time consuming to do properly.

    There is a noob friendly fun run planned with some of us and a handful of jeeps and an FJ if you're interested in tagging along with us;

@cwisema Seeing how the May twofour long weekend is May 16-18th this year, i might still be able to tag along for the fun run.

i had to double check when it was as i knew the 24th is a sunday, thinking that was the long weekend:bananadead:
I know i'll be at up to the cottage on the long as i need to keep working on it. Plan is to do some clearings to plant pines and solar arrays.

@ODSC1 Fun run on the long weekend in Bancroft again?

ahh fair enough, i'll need to pick your brain about that later then.

In my case i did apply a few layers of clear coat in hopes to protect it. but it's a chance that i had simply not washed it correctly after attempting to blue it.

probably just missed some water/patina. It’s crazy even if you miss a little bit when drying it can ruin the piece. That fire place I ended up doing twice because I didn’t notice a drop of water and when I came in the next day the centre panel was turning brown. After you clean the piece off I now rinse it in methylhydrate until it’s completely dry.
Next time I do a patina piece I’ll take some pics to give you an idea what I mean.

Would love to see the process of it, it's pretty cool to see that there are people who actually do this sort of stuff to a large scale!

I'll grab some pictures next time we do something big. Recently its all been polished/plated pieces coming through the shop. I dug through my photos and found these though.

So here are 2 styles of the same piece. I had to redo these because the client wanted more texture in the finish (top pics were the final result). These are the same panels, with the same chemical, different clear coat, and different application

[edit] wow the camera on my old phone really was shit!
    8215A279-8058-4185-83C8-40553E598C7B.jpg

The patterned one is the easiest way to do it. I basically sprayed on the gun blue, Let it activate, wash it off, spend 20 min wiping it down with methyl hydrate (it drys with minimal streaks, and takes the water with it), and then we sprayed a clear coat.

    289DCE66-4870-4AEB-BECC-4D05524067D5.jpg

The other one is the same panel (i think it has a satin clear instead of gloss), same gun blue, except I sprayed the gun blue, let it activate then scratched it back to a uniform colour. Then sprayed the gun blue again, let activate then scratched back... If you leave it on too long you end up with big flakes coming off and exposing the bare steel, so by doing lots of lighter applications you can get the colour without the flaking. the scratching back is like a mild sanding, you remove the larger flakes and can help even out odd spots (like finger prints). Once you're at the right colour you again rinse it down with clean water and methyl hydrate and when its completely dry clear coat

We use variants of this to scratch it back

One of the places we pick up patinas from is Sculpture Supply Canada. These guys know their stuff and are pretty good if you have questions. https://www.sculpturesupply.com/list.php?sf=category&vl=Patinas

[Edit] Id be down to give you a hand doing it if you need it
