All fuel injectors bad?!

So far replacing the ecm/ecu fixed it.....

Running great. My gas mileage is down a bit from before they replaced the ecu, but averaged 22.4 last 6 tanks.

 

I know it is now fixed, but Is your truck Part of the fuel pump recall. Is it possible that the fuel pump issue could be a contributor to you injectors issue?

 

My truck is not under the fuel pump recall. Supposedly a bad gasket under the fuel rail is what caused that issue.... it was towed twice more afterwards and the ECU replaced both times...

 

I am so sorry to hear this. After reading through this thread, Toyota of Knoxville is a fucking joke. ASK ME HOW I KNOW

 

Toyota is replacing the injector for Cylinder 3 on my 2016 as I type this. I had the same lights and chugging idle. I would ask to see the spark plugs before you pay to have them all replaced..

 

I haven’t had to pay for anything, other than with my time.... since my original post, the ECU has been replaced.... twice....

 

bad gas ......water in the gas

water in the gas is like pissin sand to an injector

they wont tolerate much

no less your dealer took the easy wasy out

nor cleaning & balancing the injectors

while U are NOT hi mileage its unlikely 1 new injector would balance out

Hello all! I’m new here but have read through this story line. I have a 2018 Tacoma sr. I was experiencing problems with start ups. I would drive it to work in the morning then 4 hrs later or all day later would go out to start the truck and it would start up then immediately stall and shut off.( this happened more frequently when it was a hot day, I live in FL) I would restart it and it would sound like it was starving for fuel then restart. I brought it to the dealers attention a few times and the said they couldn’t recreate it. Eventually I said they needed to figure it out and got a little irritated and they kept the truck. They have had the truck now for over a month because it falls under the fuel pump recall but the truck did send in a starter code and they said I have two bad port injectors. They are waiting on the new fuel pump to come out under the recall to fix it. But there is no fix date in sight. Getting a bit nervous about my purchase and not sure if the fuel pump cause the injectors to fail or if I’m gonna have more headaches down the road. Any input??

 

Id wait for the fuel pump then go from there.

 

Mine is a 2017 and was not under any recalls. The first time in the replaced half the injectors saying a faulty rail gasket cause the issue. The next two times, they replaced the ECU. They could not explain why the first replaced ECU went bad other than say it had an electrical short. (Unofficially tested by a rap with a hammer....)
All 3 times, truck ran fine going here and there. Then started, check engine and trac off light on, engine died. Would restart, but stumble and die when I gave it gas. They got several codes each time. #2 and #3 time, case was opened with Toyota Tech.

 

Literally the problems you were stating is what just happened to my wife today! I am deployed to Germany so wifey has the truck and what you just explained happened to her! Towed the truck to a Toyota dealership and they said the injectors. Hope all is well now! Won’t have the truck for a while since they said it takes 1-3 weeks for the parts to come in but all is good cause my wife is getting a RAV4 in the meantime.

 

After the injectors were replaced, had to have it towed again- they replaced the ECU, then several months later towed again- replaced the ECU again and have been good since.

And two ecm/ecu? I can believe it. I had a Ford engine performance instructor relate to me how one case had them baffled at the training center, in that they would replace the ecu and shortly after it would blow costing $2k each time.

As it turned out, he said it was the charging system regulator that was allowing too much voltage causing the ecm’s to blow.

Moreover, from what he said at the time, they didn’t have any high or over voltage protection built into the ecm/ecu. GM also had their share of ecu’s issues too. I had an ABS ecu on a Chevy that was draining my battery, but that it was easy to check.

Your case was a humdinger, and I hope all the troubles are gone for good

When I questioned about the second ECU, and how they determined it was bad, he softly said “they did an unofficial test, rapped it with a hammer and it failed. That determined the ECU had an internal failure “....

 

Yeah, even the high tech oscilloscope test can't do that lol!

But that’s actually a very sound testing method for field technicians. It is used for a lot of electric\electronic components. It can work on MAF sensors, relays and hell, even starters too. Just rap it with a hammer when it won't start and there she goes! Well, sometimes lol!
