Oh for sure!! Cigarette stocks are good as well, altria was my baby for a long time before that JUUL mess!! Once I have some extra money I'll probibly pick up some PM. such a juicy dividend!

I was really hopeing for a full weed national decriminalization during trump's 1st term and altria to jump in, but ended up selling my altria a few weeks ago at the start of this volatility because I wanted to have some cash on hand and out of the market.

That car payment is a retirement killer.

Those truck modifications gain you nothing in resale.

All new cars will be used cars.

When was the last time your vehicle broke down? I think I was stranded once 20 years ago.

Who gives a shit about a high milage vehicle? If you keep it for a long time with no payment, renting a nice, high end car is a really cheap good time and vacation.

My trucks a money pit and an offroad toy, it's an investment in my sanity! I have accepted it's worth scrap value which is fine with me. But my DD is a grandpa fresh 2003 avalon I got for free from a relative. Yea it's the last car i would ever want to drive but it costs me like nothing a month LOL!!

You are right on the vacation, it was nice being able to go all out on trips!

I will say there is probibly a lexus RX in my wife's future on the other side of this recession as she wants one and I'll get the paid off camry which is fine with me.

Yes, but strictly speaking all vehicles depreciate -- they have a finite useful lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced. So folks need to devote some portion of their budget to offsetting that depreciation.

For this reason, my view is that I *always* have a "car payment" -- even if it's just going into savings when the car is paid off. That money then goes towards any repairs, and eventually towards whatever I replace the current vehicle with.

As to financing vs paying cash -- that depends on the deal. Last car note I did was in late 2016 for 1.3% APY through my credit union.

That was all good information. It’s overwhelming for sure. With this stock
Market the way it is I figured I might as well start learning something since I’m green as hell with this.

My dad did that when I was growing up. I spent lots of time helping him rebuild totaled cars.

Hat's off to you, I know what that takes.

Just don’t invest money you can’t afford to lose. I know most people think cash is terrible but it’s wise to keep a rainy day fund to cover your ass in an emergency

Luckily my wife makes a damn good salary and I make a fairly decent one. We have enough money for almost two years worth of payments set aside hence why I’m thinking about dabbling a couple grand here and there to see what the feeler is like. Plus I have no debt minus the house usual bills.
My taco and Jeep are paid off as well :bananadance:

This is important. Once I buy a stock, I consider that money gone, and the dividend is what I can get back from it. You'll never sweat a correction or recession like this. If you may ever need the money, it doesn't belong in the stock market.

Yeah I immediately assumed once it’s invested it’s gone, just like buying something. Man.......this is a lot lol

I’d put a huge chunk of that towards paying down your house, invest some and keep the rest in savings. Having 2 years of house payments sitting around making nothing is pointless

Some people don't, they expect to sell the shares at a higher price. Then, it goes up, and they want to wait "just a little bit longer" for it to go up more. Then, it goes down, and they end up selling for a loss. I suppose that could work (buying and selling higher), but I would want a time horizon of at least 10 years if I ever planned to play the market that way.

Yeah, you need to be smart in terms of what "set aside" means. Definitely have the money working for you. Immediate-need emergency funds in money market or similar, other funds laddered in CDs at least.

As for paying off some of the house principle, need to also look at what you're paying in interest and what's the effective rate after factoring the mortgage interest deduction and your marginal income tax rate.

Another factor in how big a cushion is needed is how long a jobsearch for a similar position might take. Some professions you can find a new role quickly, some take longer.

Just a reminder, political discussions are against the COC. Since TW Staff has been chasing political postings like crazy, this comes with a 30 day, all inclusive vacation to the naughty room.

I know it’s hard to not talk about what’s going on this year in politics, and to make it even worse, you all own Toyota’s. We can only discuss what tires fit and what lift conversations 24,341 times before it gets old. Trust me...I know.

I wouldn't bash Bernie on a thread about tire size, but it's kind of hard not to bring that in when a candidate (won't mention names.. again) could lose me half of my net worth. It's a fine line, stocks and politics.
