Cannot reset TPMS after new tires. Any help?

What do you mean by locking ECU? Tpms are on separate module and you have to enter new IDs within a specific time. I did not see any warnings in TS on locking anything.

 

When I said incorrect pressure will throw an error I was referring to the Autel device. Not only do these devices read, reset/relearn TPMS they can be used to simply check the status of them.

The examples I saw on YouTube showed the sensor i.d. #, the temp of the sensor, the PSI at the sensor, and the battery life.

When the tool read that one of the tires had the incorrect, and possibly, maximum out of range psi setting it showed the psi in red and did not allow the exchange to continue until this was rectified.

I mean, if I add up all the money I have spent over the years on different types tire pressure devices over the years I could pay for this tool. I will most definitely be watching for sales.

That voice, ouch! I don't think you have anything to worry about with your ecu. I pressed the button on mine and it probably would have shown up as locked on that tool. Don't use that tool. Use techstream. You can get it for free or just take it to your dealer. All you need are your codes read and you can manually enter them into techstream. You can then identify the positions and all is well.

Yea, I'm pretty sure Jim @pdenajim doesn't have a Techstream device. But you're saying that with the codes any dealer will relearn them aka program the ECU, for me for free?

 

Well, probably not free at the dealer, but it should be as simple as it is. If you have a laptop, you can buy the mini-vci cable from ebay or Amazon for $15 and program as much as you want. You can do a lot more with techstream than just ECU program. Program keys, change how your doors unlock, etc. It is well worth the $15 cable.

 

If I thought for even a minute my ECU would be safe from me and my stupidity I would buy it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately that's not the case.

For the hell of it I called a place that is highly rated and 15 minutes away from me and they charge $20 per tire to M/B, nothing to disassemble, and $10 additional to program the TPMS. If nothing else this will be my out. I like to support local business's and this place is 100% legit Father & Son shop. Like I said, Jim and I will try the

TS501 again and if it fails I am going to the shop. I really only want to reprogram these sensors because I am anal and OCD. The light definitely doesn't bug me. I am more on the fence about keeping the wheels than anything. I actually have another set of 3rd Gen TPMS at home for Steelies, brand new, OEM. But I don't want to put them in the tires backwards. Or I would only pay to break down one set and sell the 19' OEM Black Pro's & the GY w/Kevlars as a set.

 

Good luck. I tried a few places and techstream was the only way to get it to work. One place was able to get the codes in the ECU, but couldn't get them read. The light was off, but when you went through the menu dashes were displayed instead of the pressure. The problem with those hand held devices is they are universal and supposed to work with every manufacturer. I don't know how well they work with Fords or Chebys, but they don't seem to do well with Toyota.

$20 isn't bad as long as you only have to pay if it works. I had a guy try to charge me $35 for the programming that didn't work. I simply said no.

 

All this because some lazy Ford Explorer owners never checked their tire pressure and sued Firestone when their neglect caused them to roll their top heavy POS.

I have been driving some sort of vehicle since 1976. We didn't need TPMS then and we sure as hell don't need it now. I can look at tires and tell if they are low. I can chalk test them to determine what the proper inflation amount is and a pressure gauge at Auto Zone is a buck if I want some sort of scientific reading.

Buuuutttt, like I told my wife this morning on our commute to work, "when we rented that Mustang in Florida recently, and after only 30 minutes into our 1.5 hour drive from Tampa Bay to Siesta Key it sure was nice to see that light come on and let us know it was on 25 lbs in the left rear tire before it was too late". She agree'd.

So there is definitely some merritt to them.

 

On the other hand, my wife noticed an "upside down horseshoe" symbol on her dash. She didn't know what it was so she ignored it and continued driving on a slowly flattening tire.

 

Return that thing, buy Tactrix cable, download free techstream. You will still have $70 to spend on something else.

 

Has anyone here actually got a mini vci cable and techstream to program tpms sensors on a 3rd gen? I get the typical connection error when I try input the new codes.
