3rd gen down shift clunk

Just curious if anyone has a solution on the down shift clunk sound when coming to a stop yet? The transmission fluid has been checked and all greese points hit... i keep seeing everyone saying it's just part of it but didn't know if some one has found a fix for it yet though?

 

I've never heard of the "down shift clunk" or experienced it myself. What are you doing when the clunk occurs?

 

mind does it from time to time. usually if i am slowing to a stop but before i get stopped the traffic starts moving and at the same time it was starting to down shift i give it gas to speed up and CLUNK.

 

I have the exact same thing. Took it to Toyota and surprise surprise... unable to duplicate customer concern.

 

Occassionally mine will do something similar when it's still warming up, but after driving for a bit it's fine. How soon/late into driving does it do this?

 

Its usually as I'm first leaving work and it happens at normally my first or second stop I make on my way home

 

That I did experience, but only when the car was brand new. As I got more experience with the shifting and maybe with the drive train breaking in it is getting less of an issue - may have disappeared altogether. I'm at 650 miles, and I suspect it was due to just me not being used to syncing up speed and RPM on the new car/engine/transmission, not the car.

 

Yep my SR5 does it from time to time usually first or second slowdown in bumper to bumper traffic after work. Annoying, but not worrisome. Chalk it up to the weird tranny.

 

So u think maybe just need to adjust driving habits?

 

I fixed my clunk by slipping the clutch more. When it starts smoking, it's safe to fully engage without any clunk. The smell is far better then the embarrassment of the clunk!

 

I'm ok with dealing with it I'm just not trying to have a transmission replacement in a 100,000 miles because of it lol

 

Probably not even that. If it's just what I have experienced then it's just a question of you and the car getting used to each other. Mind, I did come to the Tacoma after driving the same 4 cyl car for 25 years. If you come to it from a similar vehicle maybe it's different.

But I certainly do remember quite audible clunks (especially with the window down, haha!) during the first few hundred miles. And I don't hear them anymore. If it's me or the drive train - can't bet on that.

 

Lol ok ya I came from a 3/4 ton so size difference is a quite a bit so maybe I just need to adjust to different shift points and all that of a smaller truck

 

I love the smell of burning clutch in the morning.
