I wonder if Toyota uses some type of MolyLube to break-in the engine, bearings, cam and other internal engine parts? If they do maybe I shouldn't change out the oil until 5k miles, as the Dealer mentioned to us. Or maybe the synthetic oil used is good enough for the engine break-in?

I remember back in the early 70's hearing of Amzoil but it was quite expensive for us, maybe 2 hours work wages at the gas station for one quart. We never believed the mileage claim, lol

I remember the service department telling me that the oil in my wife’s Mazda CX-5 shouldn’t be changed for the first time until the 5k mark because the factory put in a “special break-in oil”.

It's not "special. It's a moly oil. It's the factory recommended oil per they're owners manual. I use it in my wife's CX-5. I found an alternative though that's cheaper and no it not those additives.

Here are UOAs from two different members.

The first UOA is factory fill.
The second is all Mobil 1.
Only thing that kind of stands out to me is Titanium in the factory fill.

So it’s not just a break in oil?

Maybe there is a special oil they use from the factory I doubt it) but the factory oil is not what they use in the dealerships. That is bulk Castrol. I think the dealer might have said that in case there was a question about the factory oil they should use at the dealership. Dealer told me they get asked about the moly from the factory but since they don't supply bulk, Mazda says the Castrol is OK.

When I bought mine I asked the sales dude if I should bring it back for the first oil change at 500 or 1000 miles. I was thinking engine break in.

He told me they did that shit at the factory and bring it in at 10,000 miles or 1 year. Had it changed around 9,381 miles, because I was leaving on a road trip.

Fuck it, it has a 20 year 200K drive train warranty. I'll let them change it to avoid any gray areas in case I ever have a problem.

First vehicle I've ever owned and let someone else change my oil.
