Cool thanks, I was originally going to go 275 but wasn’t sure, so went a little smaller

Hey guys, new member but I have been reading this thread and others like it for the past few months. Thank you for everyone's input on this! I wanted to post my story for anyone that isn't sure if this will work or not since I was skeptical myself.

I drive a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off Road, stock suspension. Yesterday I had Discount Tire install BF Goodrich 275/70R17 Load Rated E installed on new 17x8 4Runner TRD Pro Rims Offset +5 (https://www.toplinewheels.com/produ...t-4runner-fj-cruiser-tacoma-fortuner-wheels-1). I so far have experienced ZERO rubbing, even taking driveways or the speed bumps in my neighborhood. Now I don't do really any off roading in my area so keep that in mind. I've fully turned the wheels and there is about 1-2 inches from any plastics. The guy at Discount Tire believed that was due to the rim offset, so this setup will not work for all rims but will for sure work with these TRD 4Runner rims. I can add more pictures later if anyone cares. I am extremely happy with this install, I can update in a few months when I get more wear on them.

Good to know... Anyone know if the same goes for a TRD Sport with 4Runner TRD Pro wheels?

I have the ray 10's with same offset. Slight rubbing at full lock over bumps. I have just under 2.5 lift.

Each truck is slightly different depending on the alignment setup. Some say they can run 285 with no rubbing? Just giving you my experience.

This is the setup I've been most interested in because it's close to what I want, except I'll probably go with 275/70r17 Wildpeaks on the 4Runner TRD wheels. Offset is probably the most important factor in wheel/tire upsizing. Knowing that this will work with stock suspension is a huge help!

I'd love to see some photos showing the distance between the wheels and trim work with the wheels turned to their closest position, as well as a straight on side shot, so I can see if my mud flaps will be a problem. Thanks!

OVTuned w/ 5.29s 2” lift on Dobinson’s MRR paired with ICON RXT leaf packs. SCS RAY 10s Toyo Open Country AT III 285/70R17
TLDR abstract: Anything over 265 in width will rub unless you chop or max out caster. Bigger tires require a more aggressive CMC. I opted for a moderate chop and don’t rub with 275s
    ————————
E-rated was too stiff. I have 2” of lift and have run the following tires since owning the truck - in order.

    (Rating) Size - Brand (wheels)
    1. (SL) 265/70R16 - stock kevlars (stock OR)
    2. (E) 285/75R16 - Falken At3/w (Ray 10s)
    3. (P-metric) 265/75R16 - Falken At3/w (Ray 10s)
    4. (E) 255/85R16 - Cooper STT MAXX - (Ray 10s)
    5. (C) 275/70R17 - Falken At3/w - (Ray 10s)

#s 1, 3, and 4 are the only ones that never rubbed. These only required an alignment that maxed out caster in order to clear.

The width of the tire and offset of the wheel are the number 1 reason. For me the offset has not changed since the Ray 10s were installed.

However, the combination of extra caster, lift, and E-rated tires made the ride too harsh for my liking. I am a suspension freak and had paid good money - the sacrifice in ride quality made me pursue other options.

I wanted a c-rated 32-33” < 285mm. It forced me to buy 17 Ray 10s. I spooned on the 275/70s and the ride is superb, but I had a bad rub at factory alignment specs (Icon delta joint UCAs).

    So, I did a CMC...No more rub.

Bottom line is I read everything tires and rubs. I chose to believe some of the people that say “they fit“ - they don’t without trade offs or modifications.

Picture below are current, 255s, 265s, and with 285s. IMO
    - 285s are huge and stick out too far,
    - 265/75 are too small for a 2” lift
    - 255/85s are the perfect size tire
    - 275/70R17 are a good trade off for size
    - C-rated ride SOOOOO smooth.

Im thinking of going with SR8s - 10 offset, i want to avoid cutting if possible, im thinking of running skinnies if they wont look funky, or 32s.

Just had this setup installed by discount tire, and very happy with the choice so far. Minor rubbing up front when pulling into my driveway, so may have to do some minor wheel well massaging/trimming. Been really cold here so haven't gotten out to clean up the truck and get some better pictures.

Also bought a 5th wheel to have a functional spare, but I haven't hooked it up yet to avoid damaging the wheel. I'm thinking some rubber or small towel on the elevator clamp would protect it, but if anybody has anything that's worked for them, would be glad to see it.

Has anyone gone with the General Grabber ATX's? I have a 2018 Off-Road, with new 4-Runner TRD Pro wheels, Eibach Pro-Truck lift, and Wheelers 3-spring progessive rear all sitting in boxes waiting for 275 tires. I haven't seen the Generals mentioned much, but the new design looks good. Any thoughts?

Towel could catch fire, best bet is to chop the exhaust or have a shop reroute it. Maybe there's some heat shield material you could put over that area of the tire that's near the exhaust to help protect it from direct heat.

From the sounds of it, the tire should be far enough away from the tire it should be good. My main concern is the actual clamp that holds the rim up. Discount tire wouldn't even put the spare on because they didn't want to scratch the rim. I'm glad they were straight forward, because the last thing I want to do is scratch up a new rim.

I'm thinking about just some rubber material on the clamp so there's not direct metal contacting the face of the rim.

This is what I rigged up for now. It's not pretty, but should protect the rim a little bit...also added a lock for theft protection.

It looked liked clearance around the tire should be fine.

Looks great. Are those BFG KO2 with 4Runner TRD wheels? Lift specs?
