Hah! I too sent my previous Subaru (Forester) to the graveyard when I started towing a 2300 pound boat and trailer. It had a good long life. Towing with the taco is night and day different. Pulling up the ramp with the forester sent out clouds of sickly smelling clutch fumes. The taco can pull it up at almost idle.

Welcome to TW! :cheers:Good call on getting MT.

I drive 35-40 mph in 6th if its flat ground only, like others have stated, you will be fine.
As long as you are not pressing the pedal more than about a quarter way its all good.

Yes, this tranny is buttery smooth, you will like it more as it ages.

Where is mandatory pictures of your truck? :D

Oh, and here is my new sticker i got couple weeks ago:cool:

When mine was stock, I drove it the exact same way around city suberbs with excellent fuel mileage.

You have to drop the rpms under 1000 with heavy load to get bad lugging or ignition knock. Smooth light load cruising is no issue at all.

I've made my poor truck knock under heavy load... She don't like it. And it will tell you lol

Is something critical going to happen to the engine if I didn’t do the break in like the manual states?
i saw the break in recommendation until after I drove back 20hrs and 1500 miles. Used the cruise control for like a whole tank.

In all likelihood, it will be just fine. These days, it's common for vehicles with operating drive trains to go to the scrapyard anyways for other issues. Honestly, I don't know what the varying rpms accomplishes. Valve seating used to be an issue as well as softer cylinder walls and looser tolerances. Many manufacturers don't even mention break in procedure any more. I kind of suspect it's a relic from the past. It won't hurt to vary speed/rpm. Someone with actual engineering or engine building experience needs to inform on the whys of break in.

There is probably no worry at all. Just a good practice as things do settle in a bit.

The 2nd gen v6 was awesome at this. Our 3.5s now don't like the low revs as much. I'm with TS on keeping the rpms low!

Some of it has to do w piston ring seating and cylinder wall glazing. Google both for more info.

@Johnny Cheese , I did some research on the redline ‘myth’. I found an equal amount pro and con so I guess it’s best for you to drive your truck like you’re used to, I’ll do the same w mine Happy Motoring!

You can access the low end better if you're tuned. The 3.5 is capable of more than Toyota "allows". Not bench racing, OVTune's latest offering wakes the truck up - a lot.

The debate about break in has gone on forever. I do know guys who redlined their engines in 1st or second when New and let off the throttle to engine brake to 1000 rpms and their engines lasted a long time. I know many sport motorcycle guys who do this and claim it seats the rings with the opposing pressures from redlining at full throttle then engine breaking from redline with a closed throttle. Supposedly a slow and long break in can cause a poor seal and reduced performance but who knows.

I can think of no reason why you would want to operate your engine at such a low rpm while driving at 35 mph. The engine will be happier at 2000 at least. It will be less stressful and provide better power if needed.

Remember, OP is in a 3rd gen M/T with 4.30 gears. As long as he isn't mashing the pedal, it'll putt along just fine - mine does.

Yeah. Let's not go here. Even true experts will disagree.

I once had a short convo with a person that does engine durability testing where the subject of octane came up. He said that engines on his dyno never have carbon build up. I asked if he simulates stop n go traffic and years of grandma puttering around at 25mph. LoL!

i'm on the performance 91 tune from like 5-7 months ago. Has something else come out? Keeping up with OVTune is tough because of the disorganized information in that thread. However, I'm really glad I did it because the truck was undrivable before the tune.

    For M/T, yes. 2.0 final.

Update your FM, and download the 2.0 goodness.

I'm running SuperFOB premium, which is an octane learning tune that'll adjust itself for 90-94 fuel... it's the tits.

I’m using just the low octane base 2.0 tune and it’s still a huge improvement. The engine /sounds/ different, and is much smoother. It’s much easier to drive - more consistent thanks to his throttle mapping. Happier to be at low rpms as well. One of these days i’ll be rich and can download SFOB premium

Funny, my Impreza has the N/A 2.5L and the 4spd auto, it sure loves to lug along in 4th/OD. Oh well, over a decade and 100k+ and it's running as good as ever so I guess it works. "Sport mode" works pretty well in town.

My Frontier is a 4.0L with the 6spd, it just picks up and goes. It doesn't really ever sound strained or overloaded.

Drop down a gear or 2 and get rpm's up to about 2000 rpm. Your truck and you will be much happier and you'll get better fuel mileage too.
