Came across this yesterday up in Central Pa while doing a little exploration.

 

Recent pics of the abandoned section of Rt. 61 in Centralia Pa.
The place was mobbed with people.

 

Wow, a Bucyrus Shovel. It's for sure seen much better days. I thought it was a P&H at first until I zoomed in to see the Bucyrus Erie at the top rope wire next to something like this!

Does anyone know why it says "(Destroyed)" as part of the road name on Google Maps? Never been to PA, but that place looks pretty cool.

Someday I'd love to explore Real Life Silent Hill.

The town was abandoned/evacuated due to raging underground coal fires. Look up some documentaries on Centralia on YouTube. Interesting stuff.

 

There’s really not much left to see except the overgrown streets and curbs. Nearly all the homes are long gone and only the church, township building, and two cemeteries remain.

I went to three separate “hot spots” that I know of and each of them were completely cool to the touch. When I was in my early teens, over 30 years ago, you could see smoke coming out of the ground in several places. As recently as about 8 years ago the hotspot under the abandoned highway was still warm.
This past Sunday I couldn’t find a single place where I could feel any heat from the underground fire.
I was quite surprised.

 

Found this old Toyota somewhere along a trail that connects North and South Carolina.

 

These two engines are about 40 miles from the nearest public road, and a bout a 1.5 mile hike from a logging road. They were part of a logging operation in the 1920s in the Allagash area in Maine. I can't imagine the effort it took to get them there!

 

I've seen a bunch of info on these. I'd love to check them out one day.

They aren't hard to get too, except for being "away" from things. I suggest a late August or September visit when the black flies won't be too thick. The tramway in the same location is pretty neat, too.

 

Yes. There are pics in this thread from when I took a day trip out there.

 

Ill have to check it out. Me and my 8 year old daughter are interested in abandoned places and always thought about visiting this. Would it be advised to take a kid here?
