Ball joints

Looking at replacing both upper and lower and each side. Does this look like all the parts I’ll need or is there more?

 

Yes, you need some coilovers too

 

It's a good idea to replace the lower ball joint bolts when replacing the ball joint. Part #'s

$195 43340-39585 Toyota Ball Joint - 43340-39585

43340-39585 and

$220 43330-39815 Toyota Ball Joint - 43330-39815

43330-39815 come with the new bolts.

The upper ball joint # looks correct.

 

Why would he need coilovers?

He's replacing his ball joints; his suspension could have been replaced recently or not due for replacement.

 

Stock struts are most likely worn out, and it would be an upgrade.

Before you buy the bolts for the lower ball joint go and double check to see if you have washers on you bolts or if you don’t have the washers here’s a picture of the corresponding part numbers

And buy some 242 loctite, I believe they come from the factory with some, but I just like the peace of mind, and that was the whole reason for my replacing my ball joints

And +1 to replacing the bolts on those lower ball joints. 2 are shorter than the other 2.

 

When I did my ball joints I found the NORWALK Toyota was the cheapest out the door and PUYALLUP Toyota was a actually cheaper on the base price but I believe they have tax, but double check on that

 

Those upper ones are a booger at least with the ball joint puller I rented from autozone. If you rent one make sure it has solid threads as the made the job tougher. It has been a few years but I can’t recall how I got them out. The curves on the upper control arms made it tough. I think I had it as tight as I could get the puller before it would slip and then I hammered down with a small sledge on top of the bolt with the not on backwards threaded out to the edge. I came in a few times to rethink my approach but I think it finally just gave in. I have 6 inches of lift so it might not be practical to get a swing on a non lifted Tacoma.

 

Brahhhh thanks for that info lol. I been debating on when and where to buy. Cheapest i found was $117.52 from Conicelli. Saved me $3 dollars haha.

At least you know the recommendations and stuff are only cause folks care
In my sig line (you can see if you turn phone sideways) I have the parts numbers for the lower ball joints that include the bolts you're supposed to replace with the joint.

Also, it shows the bolt part numbers for 96-02...what about 03-04? I have a 2004 4WD and have seen conflicting info in terms of part numbers for my LBJs and want to make sure I get the right part and bolts...

 

Hmm...that's good info, but Toyota parts inventory says that does not fit my 04. For the OP's sake and (and mine) and others, can you confirm those are year-specific?

 

Yeah, the ball joints are the same across all years of first gen Tacoma, only difference is between 5 lug and 6 lug. And these are the bolts you want to use as well because you don't want that rubber boot cover thing. You want to lose that cover thing when you replace your ball joints. So these are the flanged bolts that come as a kit with ball joint and no rubber boot cover thing. Keeps it simple and it's the best scenario of OEM parts across all years of first gen 6 lug Tacoma

 

Thanks but I'm confused lol

The post above says the newer 1st gens use a bolt with a washer (NOT the flanged bolts). Is that wrong? I have a 2004 4WD and for some reason the Toyota OEM parts system says those parts numbers (LBJ with bolts as a kit) do not fit. Also, someone else told me to get the "Lower Ball Protectors"...you are saying don't bother with them?

None of that's wrong.
It's all interchangeable between all of the years of first gen. (besides a couple of those long ass bolts that were made for those LBJs with the spacer and cover, those would be too long to use in 2 of the holes of you tried to use them without the cover/spacer piece)
The best combo for the joint and the hardware is the one in my sig, this does include removing and not reinstalling that cover thing if you currently have it.
This is not up for debate and is my final answer
