A-TRAC was a HUGE benefit on the trails today. Especially during those wicked tight switchbacks where one wheel was almost, or entirely, off the ground.

    'nuff said.

    Stop arguing?

Cool... know also that you could of had THREE tires off the ground, and with just one traction tire, A-TRAC could have moved you! The first video in this thread demonstrates that and I personally had high centered the back end and only one front tire had good contact with the ground... and I was pointed uphill on a steep grade... (I was backing down a deeply rutted trail, and drove into the pair of ruts) A-TRAC drove me right out!

Its kinda sad that some of the posters on this thread are completely, utterly obsessed with Atrac. My 06 offroad does not have it, if it did....great, Id use it and get on with my life. Since it doesnt....#!UCK IT!! Yes, we understand that the 09+ offroads have Atrac. Some havent stopped talking about it for oh.....since I started to read threads here (8 months?). Personally, I think its just more electronics to break on these already overdone pickups (need manual hubs, windows, locks, NO carpet, manual T case ect...options) I knew of Atrac when I bought the used 06, didnt think twice about getting a 09+ because of it, because MOST of us cannot afford to take a 30K truck to do some serious offroading, unless Im just that poor. I would rather have a built up beater with dents and shitty paint/interior and LOCKERS as a serious offroader, but thats just me.
Most of these trucks are Daily Drivers, I take mine offroad to hunt, fish, bike, shoot or a little fun now and then but have nothing to prove to anyone on a hardcore trail in Moab where lockers seem to be KEY, and most offroaders there truck/trailer their offroad vehicles to and from the trail. (I go there 2-3 times a year to MT. bike, and almost EVERY vehicle there is a jeep, or some old built up beater.) Not to many people want to(can afford to) beat the crap out of a brand new pickup proving it offroad IMO. The wheelbase is too long in these pickups with access cab long bed anyway IMO. Atrac would help in the snow around here but shit, never had any problems with a regular ol 4x4 getting around, and we get a shitload of snow in the winter (why I live here, live to ski).
Just had to rant a little about how NOBODY gives a shit if you have Atrac. Believe me, EVERYBODY accepts it!!! Now get off the computer and go out and USE it! Any when you done, SHUT UP about it!!
A locked/lifted jeep will DESTROY your "offroad stickered" "atrac" pickup anyway, a cj-5 especially. IMO:D

So David, you've only posted about 20 times that front lockers are awesome and that this is not a front lockers vs Atrac thread. You also mention that having more traction options is good. Why do you hate front lockers so much? :D jk.

I saw it work in person on basically a stock truck (the video of David going up One Tri Hill). I thought it was pretty cool and impressive. The fact that it comes on the newer Off-Road Trucks stock is what makes it truely great.

I'd be happy with just a front locker or Atrac! I got neither!

I know. If someone wanted to buy my truck for the right price I would sell and buy a 4x4. Maybe it's worth a shot.

Thank you everyone for expressing yourselves in this thread... Paul, good to see you here!

This is a public discussion forum... and that is all I seek to discuss back in forth with the hope of increasing our knowledge...

    1) Regular (open differentials) 4WD gives twice the traction ability of regular 2WD.

    2) A locked differential gives traction ability to both tires per axle, even if they don't have any traction.

    3) An open differential only gives ability to the tire with the least amount of traction.

    4) A limited slip differential favors the traction tire.

The 2009+ Tacomas have three levels of limited slip:

    a) TRAC in 2WD (braking and engine regulation to divert torque to traction tire)
    b) AUTO LSD in 2WD and TRAC in 4WD-HI (no engine regulation for max. power)
    c) A-TRAC in 4WD-LO (brakes non traction tires forcing torque to traction tires)

Non A-TRAC equiped 2009+ Tacomas can have the advantages of TRAC in low range by doing the yellow wire mod.

The limited slip features are enhanced on the Off Road 4WD TRDs becaue that model uses a hydraulic brake booster, which is why A-TRAC is a very able tool to move the truck.

Without A-TRAC, the only way to have as much or more traction is with locking differentials.
