Only idiots take our advice over an actual medical adviser so it serves them right if all goes wrong.

If you get an email stating it's from the Department of Health and Human Services and it's directing you to a link to "Johns Hopkins Global Cases Coronavirus Map" don't click anything and delete the email. It's a new delivery vector for some pretty wicked malware, currently AZORult trojan, which steals user data (it looks for anything financial or personal).

HHS doesn't have your email address and ain't sending you anything.

I wonder how often they actually look for those things. While my registration on my truck was always valid, I didn't update those little stickers in 8 years.

You'll find requests for advice on here about almost everything including romance, tires, car wax, refrigerator brand, sex lube, science fiction novels, and which is the smartest Kardashian (answer: their parakeet).

It's only natural to seek advice from generally like-minded individuals who share a common interest (though usually not online).

What's NOT natural is taking the dispensed advice without a generous helping of salt.

I mean, hey, I would probably put more stock in some things posted here than on CNN, Facebook, etc.

Good deal. I work for the government (IT security) and we don't email or phone anyone. Official letters, period. Yet thousands fall for the scammers.

Thanks, I’m plenty serious in my post. She’s one of those. She just responded and I got her. And she informed her school might be closing for ten days to two weeks starting Monday. I told her I hope she’s going to get paid.

We have to be ready to go 100% telework if they shut down the facility. Most of the people can manage, but my son also works here as a desktop support tech and he HAS to be here to build laptops and desktops for people. No word yet on what their plan would be.

Nowadays with automatic plate readers I imagine they don't have to "look" -- plus it's pretty easy to see the color of the sticker and whether it's this year's or last year's or something else.

That said, I was pulled over once because the LEO thought my motorcycle inspection sticker was out of date.

At least she acted a little embarrassed when she saw it was in fact valid.

She hadn't realized (or had forgotten) that although motorcycle tags all renew at the end of April, the inspection sticker is good for 12 months from the date of inspection -- so you can have last year's inspection sticker color and this year's registration sticker color and be good.

Just got a new update on it: screenshots!

The government is not an "org"
    upload_2020-3-11_13-16-32.jpg

They're also targeting corporate email networks with this:

    Direct-targeted "Health Advice"

Saftey Measures to Mitigate Threats During COVID-10 Phishing Scams
    • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails and be wary of email attachments.
    • Use trusted sources—such as legitimate, government websites—for up-to-date, fact-based information about COVID-19.
    • Do not reveal personal or financial information in email, and do not respond to email solicitations for this information.
    • Users need to be more diligent as there are always people looking to take advantage of a crisis to cause harm to another.
    • Check the URL before typing it in the browser: You can inspect a link by hovering your mouse button over the URL to see where it leads. Sometimes, it’s obvious the web address is not legitimate. But keep in mind phishers can create links that closely resemble legitimate addresses. Delete the email.
    • Look out for spellings and grammatical errors in the email address
    • Turn on two-factor authentication if possible.
    • Look for generic greetings. Phishing emails are unlikely to use your name. Greetings like “Dear sir or madam” signal an email is not legitimate.
Avoid emails that insist you act now. Phishing emails often try to create a sense of urgency or demand immediate action. The goal is to get you to click on a link and provide personal information — right now. Instead, delete the message.

WHAT?!?! Next thing you're going to tell me is that I'm not related to Nigerian royalty.

Truth be told I don't know how we will ever get people to stop clicking on those links. My work has hired an outside company to do an in depth pen test and a followup a year later. As part of that they did a phishing test and an embarrassing number of people, who should have know better, clicked on the link. A year later, and after a training blitz we STILL had people clicking. :facepalm:At least the second time had fewer, but people come on. (The CFO was so pissed about the results he wanted IT to run regular phishing attacks and anybody that got caught would be written up. HR stopped it. :notsure: )

Even if they'd put a .gov instead of .com, I can virtually guarantee that hyperlink doesn't go where it appears it'd go.

My company's IT department actually does do regular phishing emails - and it's disheartening how many still fall for stuff.

Not sure if there are any HR related consequences, but those who fall for it do get to do some additional compliance training I believe.
