The SKINNY on skinny tires

Skinny’s also seem to be better for steering through shallow snow and especially ice on the highway. I live in Idaho and skinnies win when it comes to shallow snow and ice. Like an ice-skate principal. If all the weight of the truck is pressing down on a skinnier patch of rubber, directionally it will steer better on hard and slippery surfaces (no pun intended). For deep stuff you can definitely dig too deep and be dragging pumpkin hard with skinnies. I keep a set of both for this very reason. Most of the time you aren’t driving through snow deeper than 12-16” though unless you are trying to “get away from it all”.

 

Did you ever get the rubbing sorted out?

I’m going with the same specs on my wheels and am entertaining this size tire. But if I’m going to battle rubbing I may just stick to a 265/70.

Wish I never got rid of it That thing was bad ass ,Dana axles ,4 speed . Motor all tricked out . I dumped a lot of money in to it that it really didn’t need . Then I got married and that was the end of that

 

To all of the experts out there on Skinny's.....I am looking at a pair of Falken Wildpeak 255/80 17's on a 2013 dclb. I have a 2.5 inch 6112 lift, JBA UCA's, and Heavy Dakars in the rear. My question is......with the JBA's, since they are already 3 degree's positive caster, what should I be asking for regarding alignment numbers for the caster to not get rubbing? Anyone have a set up like this?

 

I have damn near the same set up as you and also want to go 255/80 17s . But I’m an Access cab . Curious to the answer also !

Hi Jared, not sure about the 13' but on the 17's some guys go for 5 degrees!

Just stating that it's possible, but not sure about your need.

 

I have a 2016 with a 2.5" lift (5100s) and Total Chaos UCAs. I have 255/80/17 Cooper ST Maxx. My caster is right around 3.0 degrees and I do get some slight rubbing if I enter a driveway transition at an angle with any significant speed. I still have the mud guards on and I'm pretty sure if I removed them the rubbing would be non-existent. If you want to make sure to avoid rubbing, I would recommend 3.5 degrees or slightly higher.

Edit: although since you are driving a second gen your results may vary

Your wheel offset will also impact this
