The main reason I like the off the shelf dehydrated meals is for the complete lack of any after meal clean up. Close the bag, lick off the spoon and you’re done. Meals that are made in the pan require quite a bit more clean up which generally translates to quite a bit more water. Depending where I’m hiking at/through or camped at that’s not always easy to spare the water for clean up.

When that’s not a problem - mac and cheese, instant rice, packets of salmon/chicken/oysters, and ramen are all pretty quick and lightweight. I usually bring one stripped down MRE for last resort or a quick meal if needed. Sandwiches made on hard rolls with cured salami last for a while with no problems and are a nice lunch option if you have the room to pack them.

Wife brought one of these home a couple years ago. Been adding it to all sorts of home packed meals.

Oh shit! Where did she get that?

I had a bottle of powdered marinara for a long time and loved backpacking with that

A wholesale food place in Texas, I ring my sister in law for a case when I run out. Boy use sea it to add more cheese sauce to his Mac-n-cheese and I like it in tuna.

Just a bunch of old crap
This stuff tastes just like Kraft mac n cheese powder. I even use it at home to cheese up various sauces and casseroles. Cheap price and doesnt taste like generic. 1lb jar is smaller than you'd expect

I like Mountain house and backpackers pantry, I usually have on-the-move food for breakfast/lunch and only cook for dinner. So breakfast/lunch are protein bars, granola, some high calorie crap I can chew on the move (i avoid things like pro bars cause i tend to choke on em their so dense)

Curious, I never experienced this. Of course the days i've spent at altitude were long so I tended to need the calories. The water thing is absolutely true

Two things that I bring are a piece of Parmesan cheese and precooked bacon. I prefer to par cook the bacon then drain with a paper towel. You render out a lot of the fat and moisture so it weighs much less and crisps up very quickly. I call it my culinary duct tape.

A jar of peanutbutter, a can of chocolate frosting, a bag of peanut M&M's, and some snickers bars if weather allows. Cheap, calorie dense, high calories per oz. If I want caffiene in the morning I'll bring repackaged sho-ka-kola or caffienated cliff bars.

I'm not big on eating nice foods when out and about.

Oh yeah, and a bottle of whiskey when possible. I go simple and dense on food to make room/weight for liquor lol.

Anyone have a link to the site to check snow level and conditions? I'm trying to plan from Onion Valley to Whitney Portal exit possibly end of June but want to see snow levels on the 99 switchbacks to see if its possible or save for a later date. I know its a lower snow year so hoping that maybe itll be melted by then if we don't get anymore snow. Last year I broke my tibia so my trip had to be canceled.

    Just the basics
I don't have a link but Onion Valley to Kearsarge is a great hike. I read that coming in from that side/route permits are still required. Are they easier to acquire than from Whitney Portal?

Yea its a lot easier. It's not a lottery. Its just like any other backpacking permit. Reserve it online.

Does the REI 20% off coupon usually come in around this time? I remember receiving dividends and the coupon around the same time.

Same. I have $122. Hoping to use the dividends combine with the 20% off coupon to pick up some new climbing shoes.

    Seeking advice.

Have a Jetboil Flash on the way.
Where is best place to source fuel?

Local Academy doesn't carry them anymore.
Listed online for $6 per 100g can.

    Amazon has 100g and 230g for $20/ea.

    Thoughts? Suggestions?

I use the Coleman cans from Walmart. They work fine on my flash.
