Any power gains from a cold air intake

My cousin is a mechanic, I posted this question he gave basically the same response most people on here are giving. He said you wouldn't have much of a performance gain w/o a performance exhaust, which if I decide to do this I'd definitely go with a Flowmaster single in/dual out! He said might give you a little more sound and a little more off the line. Another thing he said is you can wash it and reuse it, which I know that!

 

Does he know your talking about a Toyota?

I want to add my cousin definitely knows it's a Toyota he basically said there's not much if any performance gains especially without a performance exhaust. If I were to decide to do this I wouldn't do it without any sort of exhaust upgrade anyhow.

Injen intake on mine for a 2k miles so far. My factory tube fell apart and a buddy had one on his 1st gen. Just got it for looks, and the fact that it’s metal and the universal silicone boots can be easily replaced in the future. Hell when the powder coat starts to get ugly one day I can get it redone too.

 

Alot of people don't understand intakes.

Short ram intakes generally follow the path of the factory intake with less resistance and a larger tube. A myth is that they suffer from heat soak. Heat soak does occur at idle but when the vehicle is in motion at a decent speed it is going to pull cooler air that is flowing into the engine bay.
Less resistance, better flow, cooler air, more power.

Cold air intakes are generally placed in a location where the filter is not seen from the engine bay. An example is the wheel wheel behind the fender liner in some vehicles. Caution needs to be taken as they are far more susceptible to puddles and hydrolock but provide air that is even closer to that of the outside temperature.

I love short ram intakes and they pair really well with something such as the AEM Dryflow filter which require no oil.
If you're truly worried about "heat soak", then you can wrap it in heat reflective tape.

I've had my AEM short ram intake on my other vehicle for 12 years without issue. Love the sound and it helped mpg by a small amount.

 

I had a 99 4 cylinder 4x4 growing up and I put an Ebay cold air intake on it. Noticeable HP gain but nothing crazy. I would have to take it off and put on stock for smog purposes and always could tell a difference when it wasn't on. It was one of my favorite mods I did to my 99'!!!
