Leaky gasket on coolant bypass housing.

2005 2.7 L Tacoma. I have a coolant leak on what I believe is the coolant bypass housing - sort of behind the thermostat housing. It's very tight in there. I successfully removed the housing but I imagine I'll have to remove the intake manifold in order to actually fix it. Anyone have experience doing this?

 

The service manual says the intake has to come off, but some have said they replaced it without removing the intake. It is very tight in there.

If it were mine I would get the replacement pipe that is all metal and not plastic. Your leak is probably the joint in the pipe and not the gasket. That was the reason in the redesign to an all metal pipe assembly.

The new part number is: 16268-75110 and gasket # 16258-75021.

First post. Hi everyone. 1996 Taco 2.4 2wd


I know this is about a 2.7 3rz, but in a search for the gasket for my 96 2.4 2rz I found that there is a different gasket then the 3rz. The gasket for the 2rz is #16268G which is in the last picture.

 

Well this was actually about the 2.7 liter 2TR-FE engine.

 

What year did they change from the 3rz?

 

I have a 2005 2.7 and I have this exact leak I think coming from the coolant bypass housing. Is the power steering resovior right above the bypass housing? Just trying to make sure this is what I'm looking at.

 

In 2005 they changed from the 2.7 liter 3RZ-FE 150 HP to the 2.7 liter 2TR-FE 159 HP.

 

Just did this job on my 05 Tacoma, after the fight to get the damn thing in and all button up no I have over heating issue. Any suggestions?

 

Huh? I no understand the question. Restate or maybe some punctuation might help me.

1.) Make sure you have ALL of the air out of the system. Park nose up on a steep hill and run the engine until the thermostat opens and then add fluid as it is running until no more air comes out.

2.) You could have a thermostat that is sticking closed. Did you remove the thermostat when doing the bypass pipe? Is the thermostat properly aligned in the housing. The hole or jiggle pin should be at the top of the housing + or - 10 degrees rotation.

2TR-FE Engine
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

1. Drain engine coolant.
   
2. Remove water inlet.
   
3. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, then remove the water inlet.
   
4. Remove the gasket from the timing chain cover.
   
5. Remove the thermostat from the timing chain cover.

To install:

1. Install a new gasket onto the thermostat.
   
2. Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve upward.
   NOTE
   
   The jiggle valve may be set within 10° to either side of vertical position.
   
   
   
3. Install a new gasket and the water inlet with the bolt and 2 nuts. Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
   
4. Add engine coolant.
   
5. Check for engine coolant leakage.

Jimmyh, I ran those part numbers for the pipe & gasket past a guy I’ve been dealing with at a parts store, and he said his system showed these part numbers won’t fit on the ‘05 Tacoma 2.7L. Only for 2012 to 2019. Is his information incorrect? I’ve had it happen at a part store in the past with a 69 Mustang. Was the part re-engineered in 2012? Which would explain why it shows from that year forward?

So I just did this and replaced it with the metal pipe and my problem seems worse. With the metal pipe, there is no spot for a gasket, so I put it on and torqued it down.

On the plastic pipe, the gasket slot is in the pipe.

Am I missing something?

 

Incorrect assembly or incorrect gasket.

The new gasket/seal for the metal pipe should look like this:

 

There was no gasket. Not even a spot on the pipe or seating surface on the block for one.

It's flush, I cleaned both surfaces off before installation and properly torqued it.
