yeah I called TAV and they said they fee it maximizes drivability and mpg regain and overall feel of the vehicle. They said they’ve been dealing with regearing for a long time and honestly they brought up a good point of Nitro gears being like the only manufacturer of 5.29 so it would make sense for them to push 5.29 a little more. It is really up to opinion but I think for overall driving I’m gonna go 4.88. Honestly padden is such a good price I could change my mind/ have them do 5.29’s, sell the 4.88’s second hand and still not be too bad off. It’s all just money right

 

Got my gear change scheduled with Paden for later this month. NITRO 4.56. Stoked!

 

Are you adding a front e-locker? Or does your truck not have a rear locker? I'm wondering how much extra it would be if I had them put an air-locker in the rear for me + 4.88 gears. If you're adding a locker how much was it on top of your gears?

 

Total cost will be 1950 for my already e-locked truck. Not sure what adding lockers would cost.

 

Oh gotcha so you're not adding a locker - you were just clarifying that it cost more for trucks with a locker?

I'll give them a call and see if they can put an ARB in mine.

Still can't believe how cheap this place is. Does anyone have a report after the break-in period using this shop, yet? @Graffiti Rock How is your truck running?

 

Just passed the 500 mile mark and the truck runs better than stock and is 1-2 mpg up from before (~15 mpg). I'm wondering if i have to do the same distance in 4HI or is the front diff always spinning? Also, do you guys know when I should change the diff oil for front/rear?

Yeah you’ll want to put it in 4HI and do a lot of miles on dirt roads. From what I remember, you want to change diff oil when you hit 500. They should have told you about the break in period.

 

Pretty sure front diff is always spinning unless you have manual hubs.

 

I’d call nitro gear about the front diff, but as I recall they recommended putting it in 4 hi for a lot as well. Check out max Powell’s regear video there was more info in that. As for fluid you should switch at the 500/1000 mark to get all possible metal shards out and start fresh. also look in ECGS articles about types of fluid. They make some strong arguments for standard gear oil vs synthetic when you look at the actual component temperature inside the diff versus just the oil temp. Standard is much cheaper too

dang! I need to do this for my 2004. Please post up how it turns out, how your milage looks, power, etc. And overall experience at this shop.

 

Gear change done! Ran the gears through the first two heat cycles on the way home. The improvement in drivability was noticeable right off the bat.

Paden Drivetrain was great and I highly recommend them if you live in the Portland area.

$1980 total for Nitro 4.56 gears (w/existing e-locker).

When I picked my truck up this morning there was a red 2nd gen on the lift, also getting 4.56 gears. Was that someone in this thread?

I'm so damn close to pulling the trigger - I'll be sure and write up a report. Also not because of stimulus monies (but that being said, I'm not going to tell anyone how to spend their money), I lucked out and found some solid contract work last weekend before everything shut down.

Just have to wait for them to pay me, ah freelance work, gotta love it.........
