Backup camera ideas

Looking to upgrade the headunit and add a backup camera. I think I could mount this

Next to the tailgate handle like a 2nd or 3rd gen. It looks like it should just fit and hopefully look like part of the black plastic handle itself. Not sure how I’m going to route the wire from the tailgate. I see there are drain holes but I’m wondering about wire getting pinched or chafing. I’ve seen pics of cameras on the tailgate on the forum but no description of how they routed he cable. Any thoughts?

 

If you are worried about chaffing where a wire runs through a hole (and you are right to be worried), you could look for a rubber grommet of the right size, put it into the hole, and then run the wire thru that. If the hole is not round, you might want to use some split flex tubing around the wire.

 

If I were to install one of these, I’d probably run thee wire under the bed and then into the cab through a hole in the floor (maybe O2 sensor wire) or up to the engine bay and through the firewall if there were enough wire.

 

I’ll take a walk up the block to see how the neighbor’s 3rd gen is run to get some ideas.

 

I figured I would run the cable up one of the frame rails cables tied to the run for the brake lights. I’ll need to find where the backup lights get their power or pull the console apart to see if I can pick up +12v for the backup lights there. If that pans out then it should be fairly simple to sneak the video cable along the floor and up under the dash. The trick for me is going to be getting the cable from the tailgate to somewhere under the truck.

 

If you're talking about mounting it to the black plastic, you will have a hard time finding the space. I thought about using one of those cameras with the stud, but the nut for mounting the handle is right where you want to mount it. Pull off your tailgate handle and you will see what I'm talking about.

Someone on here actually removed/drilled out the nut on the handle and then used the stud on the camera to mount that side. If you go this route I believe you will need to widen the hole in the tailgate as well. Also, you won't be able to aim the camera unless you get one that can move independently from the mount.

 

That was exactly what I had in mind. I won’t know if I have to widen the hole or drill a new one until I have the camera in hand. I don’t think the nipple on the back of the camera will interfere with the rods inside the tailgate but I’ll be sure before I start blasting holes in sheet metal.

 

A couple minutes with a 5/16 drill bit and it worked perfectly.

took me a while to get moving on this but Amazon had the HU I wanted for $50 off because the box was dented. That was all the motivation I needed. Used a grommet in a drain hole and flexible sheathing to go between the tailgate and under the bed

 

What camera is it? Can you show a close-up picture of the mounting and the picture of the image shown on head unit? Please.

 

Here's mine. I took the lock off my pop 'n lock and used that hole to mount this camera I found on Amazon.

I still need to adjust this, ideally the red line would be on the back edge of the bumper. The camera came with tapered grommets to do that, I just haven’t gotten around to it

 

My goal was to stop backing into things. I can’t see the bumper in your camera

 

Bummer, Amazon does not ship it to Poland. Crap. I really like the image on your DD especially that you can see both corners of the rear bumper. This is what I was looking for. I guess I need to utilize my friends in USA to ship me this camera. Thanks a lot for the info.

 

I did a lot of research on cameras with super wide angle lenses. It is very difficult to find the actual angle of view because so many of them exaggerate it.

and it does have a SUPER wide view. I currently have it mounted on my topper rack, and I can see a whole street behind me including my bumper.
It's great for backing out of parking spaces in a lot.

I'm going to experiment with putting it just below the topper window handle to get a better view of the bumper.



Also, I bought it for $60 a year ago, so that current price is a steal.

 

I'm planning to fit a stud-mounted camera to a small hole drilled on the left side of my Pop'n'Lock. Looks good mounted in the lock hole, though.

I am going to install it just to the left of the tail gate handle, at the same height.

This is so it won't be blocked by my hitch mounted bike holder.

I am going to use a rear view mirror monitor thingy, if I can figure out how to get the metal mounting puck glued to my windshield.

I think mine has a very light tint on the inside, so the glass glue doesn't work.

 

I could have angled it more, but where the red lines are, I have about 12" before hitting the bumper. I'm good with that. I needed it more to see what's coming around the sides. My cap blocks a lot of my view from behind.

Here's a late model Hilux (at a company up-armoring them for our Uncle). Note the camera mounted on the tailgate panel itself for those with courage enough to drill into it.
