OK...I have been purchasing new vehicles for 60 years...lots of different models and brands.. A new one for me. Today I was having my 2018 in for its 30,000 at my local dealer. I was informed in writing by the service writer that the tech working on my truck said that my truck's rear differential "required immediate attention" as a part of Four Wheel Drive Service. "Item Description: A burnish is a cleaning and deep polish....Reason: The burnishing must be performed after replacing or repairing the rear differential clutches." All for $280. I questioned this and was told that maybe because I didn't tow with the truck, it could wait until the truck had 50000 miles on it. My truck has never had any work done on the rear differential. I watched it come off the carrier. Needless to say the work was not done. I have contacted both the service department manager and the owner of the dealership. Yeah.... I am a bit PO'd.

I don't think the differentials in these have any clutches. Sounds like they're full of it.

Sounds like a $280 diff lube change to me. I'd ask to see this process performed...no shit, a 'deep polish' huh?

It sounds like they were inventing a way to fleece you . Did they start out by showing you your air cabin filter and say it was still clean and did not need changing but ....rear end ...

Is that tech an ex Honda tech. I googled burnish rear diff and the first page was nothing but Honda related.

...and to think I have been a customer of this dealer for almost 30 years. Good thing I always question work that needs to be done. Never have felt "shafted" before. I pointed that out to the owner in an e-mail.

The owner is the one who orchestrates the thing that is his dealership. Time would have been better spent e-mailing an old friend..

Wow, that's a new term for rip off! There are no clutches of any kind in Tacoma diffs. And polishing a clutch is counter productive because the purpose of a clutch is to create friction! They would be better off polishing turds! Feel ripped off because you were lied to! I would recommend a new dealer.

We have to burnish the brake pads on new ATVs. The process takes the glaze off the face of the pad to create better friction. Its a fun process to do too.

In Thailand you could get your diff burnished for like $2 tops. $3 if ladyboy.

That's a new term for me then... we occasionally have to deglaze the brakes on the equipment at work. It required backing up and braking hard without locking up a few times. Never heard it called burnish though.

As long as they don't start talking about greasing customers, we're probably safe.

Sounds like you need to go back and get burnished. Ask for the special behind the counter deal.

That's what they call it in the service manual as well as in the owners manual.
We take the ATV out and get up to 20 mph, hit the brakes to slow to between 0 and 10 mph, let off and repeat 30 times.
