this is the one that keeps nagging at me to switch... could always trade my wife’s Crosstrek in, but then it’d be her DD and not mine :(

i got my 2013 sport taco with 54k miles last year. my mother got a brand new 2019 1500 big horn. I'd rather not have TSS in a newer toyota. i say 2.5 gen taco is your best bet

I'm gonna be looking at a few trucks tomorrow. My goals for the new rig will literally be road purposed, and any type of lift will be purely for aesthetics and less for off road functionality.

If you're really set on wanting the 3rd gen Tundra, have you thought about leasing something until then? I traded in my 14 Tacoma to lease a 2020 Tundra. 2.5 more years and i'll trade it in and then get the new Tundra after it's released. I'll be able to at that time decide if I want to buy it out or now.

Or hell, lease any vehicle. Repairs will be covered under warranty (if applicable issues). Assuming you don't drive 20k miles a year...

A mechanic that I know said that he had looked/worked under the Tundras, Chevys, and Dodges. He said without a doubt the Tundras are far better made and have tougher stock components than the others.

People who haven’t done research will tell you to stay away from RAM and GM, the facts are this new Generation of RAM is the best yet. Truck of the year, and people’s choice 2x. The truth is everything out right now beats the Tundra, only purists think it’s worth spending $50k on a extremely dated truck. I researched and test drove Tundra TRD Pro, RAM Laramie, and gmc Denali when trading in my 2016 Tacoma. Ended up with a 2019 RAM 2500 Laramie, loaded with everything you could ever want in a truck. And she gets same mpg towing 8k lbs as a tundra does empty. My GF went through the same decision, she was dead set on a Denali until she drove my truck. She just bought a 2020 RAM 1500 Limited, it’s ridiculous nice. In the end get what makes you happy.

KBB has the 2020 top safety pick for a ram 1500 truck I believe. My mother’s 2019 big horn is the best truck I’ve ever seen. I loved the 1794 tundras but that’s like $10k more than my moms 1500. She got it for 41k with lifetime warranty. 7k down. I was worried cause it was the new 5th gen rams when we looked at the truck. Put some falkens on that baby & it’s a bad ass truck. I’ll post a pick here in a bit when I get back to my desk.

Another vote for Ram. I get rental trucks all the time for work. Those Rams blow everything else out of the water.

They were having some crazy deals on the 1500 RAM trucks last month. Got the gf’s 1500 limited with every option for $44k.

If you've never not needed a truck, get a truck. When I sold my 2017 Tacoma, I considered the Tundra 5.7 and Ram Rebel. Drove both and both had great power (well, compared to a 3rd Gen Tacoma and even a 2nd Gen.). I ended up with my 2014 Tacoma, but my father ended up with a 2018 Tundra 5.7L. He and I love it, but the gas mileage is shitty.

I've always wanted a 4Runner and test drove it during that time. I just couldn't get around not having a bed. I do a lot of hunting, diving, and fishing and throwing my stuff inside, on top, or on a hitch carrier just didn't make sense.

When I drove the Rebel, it would supposedly go in and out of 8 cyl or 4 cyl to save fuel. Me being picky, I tried to pick up on when the full 8 cyl kicked in. I had a hard time telling, which I liked. It had so much features that I liked, but the truck and package was out of my comfort price range. Even being a Toyota guy for most of my vehicles, I think I would've tried the Ram.

Anyways, test drive what you can and go from there. Good luck with your decision.

I am close to buying new and have come to the conclusion it will be a lightly used one owner 2014-15 OR DBL Cab, or a new 4Runner TRD Pro. Tundra is just too big for city, and lousy mpg overall. 3rd gen to many problems, mismatched drive train, etc. Will probably end up modding a low miles 2014-15 to suit my needs, I tow a small 17 ft casita TT about 3 times a yr vacation, as well as towing a side by side Yamaha 700 Rhino several times a yr to Nevada and offroad up to 60 miles for gold mining.

Ford has a mess going with the F150 5.0L, right now. Heavy oil burning due to new style block with plasma welded cylinder walls, that one is out for me. F150 has a great frame under it, for me eco engines are out.

I'm tempted to say Tundra, but I'd wait for a redesign. They are solid trucks but have needed an upgrade for a while But it should be soon, I keep hearing 2021. If it has to be Tundra I'd buy used, but 2016 or newer.

If not Toyota I like Ford just fine. My 2007 Tacoma just got too small and we bought a 2014 F150 Supercab used in 2016 and kept the Tacoma. I looked hard at Tundra then but there were no used ones equipped the way I wanted it. If you go full size you want the 36-38 gallon fuel tank. Trust me on that. The big tank not being an option on used Tundras is the primary reason I went with Ford.

My Ford only burns 1 more MPG than my Tacoma, but the big tank is great, especially if towing and even when not I can choose where I WANT to buy gas, not where I NEED to buy gas. I can bypass areas where gas is expensive and fill up where it's cheap.

Mine has the 5.0 and it has been perfect for 87,000 miles so far. But there is nothing at all wrong with the turbo engines. I'm really liking the 2.7. It will out run both the 3.5 and the 5.0. If you choose the right gear ratio will tow almost 8000 lbs, and gets better fuel mileage than Tacoma. It is also the least expensive option. You can get a 4X4 Supercab XLT with the 2.7 right around $40K.
